Honoring the Past

Trottier, Smith, Bossy, Potvin, the great names of the Islanders’ past came together last night for a celebration of their 1980 Stanley Cup championship. While seeing all the past greats was a thrill for the fans, the current Islanders looked pretty good too. Chris Campoli scored the game-winner midway through the third period and Trent Hunter added an empty-net goal to give New York a 4-2 victory over Philadelphia.

Meanwhile in New Jersey, the Devils outmuscled the Rangers for a 2-1 victory. The game was a throwback to the pre-strike NHL because it featured a lot of hitting and physical play. Grant Marshall, still upset with Darius Kasparaitits for a hit the last time the teams faced each other, was assessed an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for motioning like a chicken. Brian Gionta had the game-winner and Martin Brodeur won his 30th game for the 10th consecutive season. The Rangers lost Marek Malik to a shoulder injury, exposing their already thin defense corps. With the trade deadline later this week will the Rangers make a move?
