The 13th Look

2006_03_santinokid.jpgLast night penultimate season 2 episode of Project Runway had its share of fashion ("It's just fashion!") but there were critical visits to the homes of the the final three to see them in the process of designing. This time around, the designers got $8,000 (didn't they get $10,000 last year) to design 12 pieces for the collection, and Heidi Klum and Tim jGunn feted the final three with champagne (and sparkling apple cider) at the Atlas. Cut to five months later, just five weeks before Fashion Week, when Tim Gunn heads to L.A. to see Santino, NYC (okay, not much of a trip) to see Daniel, and Houston to see Chloe to make his adorble Gunnisms ("I'm disarmed!"). Santino is going for '40s glamour and has some truly lovely designs, while Daniel is going for miltary meets Japanese. Chloe...well, she doesn't have sketches or a concept - everything's "organic" and you can totally tells that freaks out Tim Gunn inside but he doesn't say it.

And then, we're back in New York, a few days before the runway show, when Heidi and Tim throw down the bomb: While they're in the process of finishing their 12 outfits, they must design a thirteenth look. Crap, maybe thirteen is an unlucky number sometimes, but there is a now-classic reality show twist on that, which we'll discuss in comments for the spoiler babies. Here are our thoughts about the episode:

2006_03_chloedan.jpg- Leaving the Atlas in yellow cabs - very Apprentice-like!
- Who knew young children were not afraid of Santino?
- Also, Santino's and Chloe's baby pictures were really cute; Daniel's high-school era pictures were hilarious
- We don't think Daniel's new haircut is doing anything for him
-Tim Gunn looked so cute with Chloe and her sisters
- We're so jealous of Daniel taking Tim Gunn shopping
- Of course Daniel would think Santino would try to create a dildo dress
- Santino's statement that he's read every sh1tty blog while waiting for fashion week: Priceless
- Heidi Klum has the most amazing metabolism and genetics ever
- The producers were a little sadistic in how they totally screwed with the designers' morale by the end of the episode - good job!

All in all, we liked all the candidates once again - they seemed imaginative, interesting, and human. We can't wait until next week's finale, but till then, carry on!

Santino is a great guy. Santino FTW!

ooh, the fact that they spent so much of the show humazining Santino makes me think he won.

It was great to see glimpses of Chole's home life....what a great family. One sister runs the Lot 8 store, another has a salon in the same strip mall, Auntie does the sewing, and Mom has her own biz. I can see the judges will probably rip on her for not having a cohesive collection, or being 80s prom dressy for that one puffy pink outfit, but I loved the cutouts in the dresses.

Daniel....I was disappointed with the stills of his runway show 3 weeks ago, and seeing parts of it last night it seems so boring. GREAT white coat though! Too bad the rest of it is so dull.

I hate Santino - he's still a horrible & mean person no matter how soft they tried to paint him last night - but I have to give it upfor his really strong collection. He really suprised me because it was so much better than some of the over the top crap he got away with in the challenges.

What'd you think of the designer's choices for helpers? Nick seemed like a strategic pick by DV....you would think Andre would have been his first choice since they worked well twice as a team. I liked seeing Diana get picked. Kara presumably has her decoy collection to finish, but I think mostly Chloe wouldn't ask her after the last runway comments. EMc2 does mens wear, and no one else is really qualified.

Hoping for the boutique owner from Rice Village, but fearing it will be Mr. Rice. I don't think the west Michigan kid has a shot any longer....

Tim Gunn looked so cute with Chloe and her sisters

I thought he looked downright Hollywood Handsome when they were taking the picture.

Daniel came off as a smug prick. The humanizing of Santino totally worked for me. I'm on his side now. Though it would be nice to see Chloe win and have a chaotic group hug with all of her sisters.

I hadn't realize what a honker Daniel possessed until he had this disproportionate haircut!

The lenghty haircut from the previous show really made his nose seem smaller!

Ok, who else is getting Daniel's haircut from the earlier show tapings?

My loser friend is! (me, too)

Daniel's jacket came from this store Lounge in soho, if anyone's wondering. It's right south of Houston street next to kenneth cole.

I loved how all those cute little kids were all over Santino. They totally seemed to love him. And I've always felt that you can tell a good guy when kids and dogs love you. And he finally admitted: I'm an asshole because I'm insecure.

Despite all that, though, I think Daniel will win. Through editing tricks, the viewer is meant to feel that Daniel is going down in flames. But later, he wins it all.

I know Chloe was offended by Santino's comments that she was a good pattern maker but not much of a designer.. I like her, but it's so true! How could she not have any drawings/sketches or ideas about a full collection six weeks before Fashion Week? What?!?

I'm starting to think that Santino just kept panicking when he was given the short-term assignments because that dress they showed was extremely pretty. I highly doubt that after loud mouth Jay winning last year, they'd have Santino win though. I agree with the above post about Daniel winning though you see him looking like the underdog so far.

I am honestly impressed by Santino's turnaround, it will make this last episode tolerable to watch. I admit he was funny in the beginning but the guy couldn't stop! and how funny was his baby picture!!!
