In this town you can always find someone to argue with about who makes the best of—well, really anything. Cupcakes? Burgers? Pizza? There are numerous options for each, and passionate defenders for all. When it comes to the best chocolate chip cookie, though, we were surprised to realize that only one option came to mind. We can't even think of any close seconds. City Bakery takes the cake, er, cookie. It's perfect: crisp around the edges and chewy on the inside, with big chunks of dark chocolate for that endorphin rush. You don't have to choose between crunchy or chewy—you get both. How do they do it? Maybe it's the generous size (big enough to split if you feel like sharing). Or is there a secret recipe (replacing some or all of the butter with a different fat)? You can get them with white chocolate instead, but our money is on the classic. The cookies can also now be found at City Bakery's new cousin, the take-out-only "green" bakery Birdbath.
City Bakery
3 W. 18th Street
Tel: (212) 366-1414
Birdbath
223 First Avenue
(Between 13th and 14th)

J'adore on 23rd (off of 5th) also has excellent chocolate chip cookies. working in such close proximity has proven hazardous to the ol' waistline.
so you've never been to Greenberg's then?
or, chocolate chip cookies must look like David's/Mrs. Field's/etc?
so you haven't been to ruby et violette on 50th st between 9th and 10th?
have you had their rose, violent, dulce de leche, toffee, caramel or any of the other 50 varieties of chocolate chippers they offer?
blasphemy! or is hell's kitchen too far for you travel?
how did you not mention their chocolate chocolate chunk cookie??? it's by far superior to the chocolate chip one...
I think the best cookie in the city is at this place on 1st Ave between 13th and 14th st. I can't remember the name of the place, but its very minimal; all they sell are 4-5 types of cookies and a single brew of organic coffee. Two bucks gets you one big, amazing cookie, with coffee a dollar extra.
"I LOOOOOVE CHOCOLATE. BUT I CAN'T EAT IT CAUSE THEN I'll GET FAT. BUT ITS SOOOOOO GOOOOOD" -Brian Griffin.
How can that be the best chocolate chip cookie when I see _maybe_ one chip in that thing? I'm doubtful, but in the interest of science I'll haul my fat chocolate ass over there to check it out. Thanks for the fip.
Jacques Torres's chocolate chip cookies are better than City Bakery's (as are several of the others that people have mentioned above). Opinions are what they are, but you guys seem to miss the mark badly on a fairly consistent basis.
Hey Marc, I'd really like to try a violent chocolate chip cookie sometime, but I'm scared. Is it safe?
jacques torres chocolate chip cookies? yum. where can you get those? i haven't seem them in his stores.
l'il miss muffin and her stuffin -- tiny storefront above the entrance to the 7th Avenue stop on the Q Train. On the Prospect Heights side of Flatbush. They weigh the cookie for it's price, but it shouldn't cost you more than a buck.
Bob's Booty Bread on 23rd & 8th. Their cookies are AWESOME.
SO with you, gothamist, on city bakery cookies! they are no question the best. jacques torres makes a damn fine cc cookie too--available at chocolate haven, on hudson street just south of houston--but still only second place.
city bakery's oatmeal raisin are pretty spectacular, too. and the carmelized french toast? the best f-toast in town.
for more unashamedly enthusiastic opinions on the best stuff around, see scoboco.blogpspot.com
i have to agree, ruby et violette makes a mighty fine cookie. and they are available online: http://www.rubyetviolette.com
I personally like the no transfat choco cookies in Whole Foods buckets. Just make sure you get a fresh batch.
city bakery cookies are quite good, but i think the two jaque torres ones are actually much better. and like city bakery, jaque torres has insanely good hot chocolate (again, i think it is actually better) in multiple varities (the peanutbutter is incredible!). mega bonus that JT has over city bakery: ambience. i live on union square and used to frequent city bakery two or three times a week, and for the reasons noted above, i now travel the extra distance and go to jaque torres instead.
Jacques Torres Chocolate Haven!!! 350 Hudson (southeast corner @ King) Also in DUMBO, but dunno if they have the cookies.
the best peanut butter cookie, hands down is at marlow and sons in brooklyn next to diner. their other cookies randomly suck, but their peanut butter cookie is AMAZINGGGGG
try babycakes...
broome b/t ludlow & orchard
Torres cookies are in Dumbo, across the street @ Almondine
I am a ccc fanatic! Agree on Jacque's cookies... ask them to warm them up too. The chocolate oozes out. But, another fine cookie is at Jack's Coffee Shop on W10th St b/t Waverly and Greenwich. A nice brown, plenty of chips, and soft. You must try! It's his aunt's recipe.
The best part of this is that the picture of the cookie doesn't seem to show any chocolate chips, if you look real hard there is a dark spot that might be on buried chip, but thats it!
Chocolate cookies are so easy to bake and there are so many superior places to get high quality ingredients, why would you buy one. It takes, like 15 minutes and when you combine chocolate, butter, and brown sugar (my 3 main ingredients) you're not capable of making anything not delicious (unless you fall asleep).
I have learned to love the city bakery cookie, but I have always been partial to the massive cookies up at Levain Bakery on W 74th off Amsterdam...milk required
I used to work at Citi Bakery, and other than the amazingly fascist and rude owner, the ingredients to the cookies are not something you really want to hear about. One of those processes that you just can't unsee. Bad memories all around, and gothamist keeps touting them as this great place. Great to be a customer horrible to be an employee. (the only exception would be Lilly, she is a Queen among women)
Levain, CB, and Jacques Torres are my favorite cookie places. I actually found that JT's chocolate chip had too much chocolate...okay, that sounds ridiculous. The excessive chocolate chips/slabs kind of take away from the cookie part, but it's still awesome. The real chocolate excessiveness is in their mudslide cookie, which defies mathematics and packs in 200% chocolate...or something.
If you've never been to Levain and you want a boulder-esque cookie, go now. The insides of the cookies are like fudge. If you eat an entire one yourself, you might wanna roll over and die; I'd suggest sharing (the chocolate chip walnut is my favorite). For something kind of like Levain's texture, I'd suggest CB's melted chocolate chip cookie.
...Yeah, I eat a lot of cookies.
Anonymous, casting vague aspersions, misspelling the bakery's name, calling its jewish owner a fascist, and posting anonymously gives you the credibility of the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. What is being put into the cookies that is so horrible? Sawdust? MSG? Menstrual fluids? Quit the Rovian smear campaign and give us some facts. There have been numerous discussions of George Pataki's intestinal blockage on Gothamist lately I'm sure we can handle ingredients to City Bakery's cookies.
I realize that people like their cookies from so-called "pros". But, I think the best cookies, hands down, are the ones my wife makes. In fact, she has been asked to make them often and has had requests for them from all over the world. And the best part, they keep getting better. So keep all those cookies from all those spots. I got my own personal Cookie Genius. Peace.
I've seen no mention of LOVE in this forum, an ingredient I find essential to chocolate chip cookies. The ones I make with my grandma's recipe not only contain LOVE, but another secret indredient I cannot reveal.
Of course, Dude may also be correct ;)
I think anonymous's comment was referring to a different bakery, one perhaps under the control of the evil citigroup corporation (which would explain the introduction of non-traditional ingredients.. menstrual fluids??! ewwwww). Any case, you would think someone who allegedly worked at City Bakery would know how to spell it.
On a yummier note, I am totally addicted to their scones [makes drooling homer simpson noise], they are so light, fluffy, buttery, an amazing symphony of sweetness, richness, wholesomeness and texture. Also their coffee is amazingly bold and fragrant. But what's up with only having whole milk for the coffee, no half&half? Bold coffee demands half&half.
