Dave & Buster's in Times Square!

2006_02_arts_db.jpgJust two weeks ago we were telling our friend to have his birthday party at Dave & Buster's. "There is no Dave & Buster's in the city," he said. Since we had never thought to go to the place, we didn't know...we just assumed this city would have one.

For those who don't know, Dave & Buster's is an adult playground. Video games, virtual reality systems, skee ball and beer. Like recess served with spiked punch. Did we mention there's also food? Well, there is. We just got word in that there is a D&B opening in, where else, Time Square (it could be a coincidence, but pretty much every D&B is at most 5 minutes from an Olive Garden, hmmm). This one is opening April 5th, so start planning some happy hours and put in some time on the XBox so your hand eye coordination is top notch.

35,000 sq ft of fun, people! But will there be lazer tag?

doesn't everything like this close after a few years, due to some scandalous, thuggy incident?

I went to a D&B's (as it's referred to be the devoted I think) with a friend near a suburb of Pittsburgh for New Year's several years ago. I don't know what I was thinking; it was one of the most frightening experiences of my life. It was a big video game, bowling, dancing, boozing and smoking extravaganza; all of these frat-daddies were trolling for poon-tang, making truly nasty cat-calls and shooting other guys ("competition"?) scary looks. My friend and I played games, had a beer, and split to avoid a sweetbro "beat down".

It truly felt like that place where all of the bad kids go and turn into donkeys in the Disney Pinocchio movie.

Maybe it's better not during New Year's, but I would never suggest anyone go to this place even if it does open in Manhattan. To me, it would seem better suited to the Atlantic Center - maybe Ratner could tear down some brownstones and put one up.

D&B is a great alternative to clubs, bars, etc. It's like an adult arcade...I for one hate standing around bars drinking and doing nothing else. This place is great because it allows people to do something fun and different together (and drink as well if you want to...which give a whole new perspective to the video games!) In response to the above two comments, I lived in Philly for a few years, and the D&B there wasn't thugged out, so if it's ok there it'll certainly be fine here. What I'm wondering is how it will affect the ESPN Zone, also in Times Sq.

I cant see any news of the Times Sq location on their site. Where did you guys get your info?

Regardless, this is great news. There is no place like this in Manhattan. ESPN zone is too sports focused for me. I too have been to the one in Philly and found there to be relatively normal people there. A very good time.

It seems to me that places like D&Bs exist to serve communities where there isn't much going on. A last resort perhaps when you're stuck in a crappy town but not Manhattan! Of course, places like the Olive Garden, equally as crappy, do great business here- the tourists can't get enough of Manhattan-versions (ie more expensive) of what they can get back home. I say let em have it but please, spare yourself from what is sure to be hell

There are two places like this, one no longer exist.
It's ESPN Zone and Beefsteak Charlies.
Beefsteak Charlies used to have an all you can eat special and in thier bar area, FREE video games.
And, they served us underaged drinkers pitchers of unlimited Sangria.
So, this is like an adult chuckie cheese.

jgo: it is being built in the abandoned food court area that you walk past when leaving the AMC Empire on 42nd Street. It is above/adjacent to the Applebees.

i saw a D&B logo projected onto the sidewalk last week while trying to kill an hour. alas, they are only hiring, so i went to ESPNZone instead.

I usually stay away from crap like this, but I remember back when Barcode still existed in Times Square, and it was a decent enough piece of escapism every few months... Everyone needs a video game break sometimes, and sometimes GTA on my crappy 27" TV doesn't cut it.

I just realized I used variations of "crap" twice in just 49 words. Bad form. Let's call my 27" TV 'shitty' instead.

As an alternative, a trip should be made to Barcade in Brooklyn. Original games from the 80's and great beer to go with Tapper. Instead of $1.00 a game, the prices are still stuck at $0.25. Great place!

is this going to take over the defunct BARCODE? places like this always have to close down because videogames attract Black and Spanish Thugs.

Here in New York, we prefer our thugs WASPy.

Don't you mean African-American & Latino-American thugs?

Blacks and Latinos can join NYU Law School if they want a gangsta hangout.

Tourists, especially those from the midwest, always come to NYC with the intent on seeing the crappiest broadway shows, eating the most expensive and flavorless restaurant franchise food, and they always buy those ridiculous nyc tourist shirts, and they never move out of the damn way on the sidewalks because their eyes are like deers caught in headlights("Ooo, shiny lights"). They so damn country!

Don't you mean thugs who happen to be African American and Hispanic...Oh what the hell am i saying, just plain ol' thugs and the ignorant white folks who wanna copy them.
