2006_02_arts_pointbreaklive.jpgTHEATER (sort of): Point Break LIVE! We're not kidding. The unecessary, but totally appreciated, absurdist stage adaptation of the 1992 Keanu Reeves blockbuster, hits Galapagos for a month. The show has become an instant cult classic across the nation, and start practicing your Keanu-isms, because the starring role will be selected at random from the audience each night, and will read their entire script off of cue-cards!

Tonight through March 17th // Galapogos Art Space [70 North 6th St, Brooklyn] $10

ART: What in the world happens when artists are given the title of a Pixies song as a basis to create art? Come find out tonight at the Stay Gold Gallery. Wave Of Mutilation includes works from Tara Lisa Foley, Kyle Ranson, Brion Nuda Rosch, Oliver Halsman Rosenberg, Sarah Smith, Randy Lee Sutherland, and Sara Thustra. The opening reception is tonight.

Friday February 24th // Opening Reception 7-10PM // Stay Gold Gallery [451 Grand St, Brooklyn] // Free

FILM: BAMcinématek begins it's three week long exploration of Hiroshi Teshigahara in: Discovering Hiroshi Teshigahara. See schedule for screening times, all films in Japanese with English subtitles, except where noted.

Tonight through March 19 // BAM's Rose Cinema (30 Lafayette Ave) // $10

FLOWERS: The orchids are here! The NY Botanical Garden brings us a temporary escape from the winter with their show, set in a balmy, tropical climate. Look and learn about the fragile flower, and maybe even bring one home for yourself.

    I think it's a blockbuster in the genre of surfer-robber-Kathryn Bigelow-movies.

And I LOVE the orchid show - everyone, quickly go to the Bronx!

    A couple points:

Point Break was released in 1991, not 1992.

And a film that - even then - grossed only $40 million is NOT considered a blockbuster, at least in domestic theatrical release (before international and homevideo grosses). (Traditionally, a film has to crack the century mark to earn that appellation.)

  • We saw Point Break Live last weekend and it was really funny...definitely worth the price of admission. I recommend getting there early enough to get a seat. We had a cozy little table and seemed a lot happier than the crowd of standing patrons.
