Map of the Day: Seinfeld's NYC

2006_2_seinfeldmap1.jpg

After yesterday's massive freaking downer of a mashup, we thought today's map should be on the lighter side-- so here's The Geography of Seinfeld. Most of the action predictably takes place around the Upper West Side, but there are some outlier points in the Bronx (Yankee Stadium), Queens (the scene of the Kramer late-pickup episode), and Coney Island (Nathan's). Amusingly, the map was obviously programmed by someone who has never been to NYC: at least a third of the points are wildly off (West End Avenue located in Coney Island, the Plaza Hotel in Red Hook, etc.) It's actually sort of fun to spot the mistakes.

I read in an interview that the site was really just aimed at fellow Google Maps programers as a "see what this thing can do", and it went a little viral in the mainstream entertainment blogs.

either way I like it, and companies like Zillow.com (with financial backing) are the the product of these home grown efforts.

It's a nice idea but horrible in execution and blatantly plagiarized from another site (http://home.earthlink.net/~ase.... Also, for most locations, the map doesn't give a real life address or intersection or real business names.

Pretty half assed effort, which is a shame because it's a great idea.

What... no comedy clubs? No Papaya King? No 'Hunan on Fifth'???? And Champagne Video is a chain, I doubt they went to Queens for videos. Costanza's parents did live in Queens though, not on the UWS.

I should get back to work before I get fired and have to slip my boss a Mickey.

  • I think comment #2 was trying to point out that while it's a mistake to put the Plaza Hotel in Brooklyn, it's also a mistake to identify that mistake as being in Red Hook. Looks more Sunset Park to me. Red Hook is that geographical protuberance that sticks out into the bay.

Someone also needs to go back and read the post again..

  • Hmmmm

Even more fun than spotting the programmer's mistakes is spotting Gothamist's...the Plaza Hotel in "Red Hook"? Someone needs to go back to Brooklyn Geography 101, 'cause it ain't close.

He forgot the intersection of First and First (aka the "Nexus of the Universe"). This was when Kramer was lost downtown, and called Jerry from a payphone. Of course, the location background was a faked set in LA, but Kramer mentioned the Ray's Famous Original Pizza across the way.
