A mounted police officer and his horse were injured when the horse bolted and crashed into two cars. Somehow, the horse got "spooked" and ran a red light at West 24th and Ninth Avenue - right into traffic. The horse, named Ferguson, hit an SUV and then a cab, throwing the cop onto the ground. Both horse and cop are expected to recover. While police are investigating what caused Ferguson to bolt, one wonders if the traffic and noise of the city is just too much for horses these days. Last month, a hansom cab horse crashed into a station wagon in Hell's Kitchen; the driver was in a coma (does anyone know his condition now) and local pols were calling for a ban on hansom cabs in the city except Central Park (the ASPCA also reiterated their concerns with hansom cabs). But Gothamist doubts the mounted unit is going anywhere - maybe the horses will need more stressful-situation conditioning.

2006 ... why are there horses running around? Where are my goddamn flying cars already!??!!?
Actually, in the day of horse drawn vehicles, there were a lot of accidents caused by spooked horses. It was quite dangerous, even without the modern noise.
Ok, thats enough, I think we could all agree to put police officers on 21st Century technology, such as Segways, which don't need to be stabled, transported via a towed flatbed, conveniently consume outlet provided electricity, and the only waste product they emit is heat, which should not make a mess of our fine city sidewalks.
This measure alone could save the city hundreds of thousands of dollars which probably go toward just the ancillary costs of a mounted police unit, such as horse trainers, stable hands, horse upkeep, etc.

Do you really think that will solve anything? Remember, this is the same NYPD that had two of its officers crash their scooters during Critical Mass. Segways are a failure anyway. Their giant factory was only churning out a few Segways a week, last I heard. That company will probably be gone within a year. Even Dean Kamen's wealth can't keep it afloat forever.
BTW, Grasshopper, man who practice patience will not double post.
