Police are wondeirng if the woman who was fatally hit by a city bus yesterday had been talking on her phone during yesterday's accident. The 53 year old woman's cellphone was found near her body on East 86th Street, and the Post says she had been standing on the double yellow lines between Second and Third Avenues. Police are not going to charge the BXM-7A bus driver, but this is the second death of a pedstrian by bus - actor Richard Bright was killed over the weekend on the Upper West Side.
Related: Transportation Alternatives has maps showing the number of pedestrian fatalities and injuries at various locations in the city - here's the map for the Upper East Side.

No. Cell phones do not cause death. Stupid users cause death.
Fark had a wonderfully gruesome story about a car accident where the driver's severed arm was found some distance away from the wreckage, still clutching her cell phone.
Good, we could use a few less jabbering idiots with cells glued to their ears.
must agree - phone is not the cause of death, user's method of cell use is....
I'm a pedestrian who wastes no time badmouthing bad drivers and cyclists, and complaining about pedestrian fatalities. I do think that really stupid pedestrian behaviour notwithstanding, folks need to be less car- and wheel-centric, as do cities in general. BUT I did once complaing to an ER nurse, who pointed out to me that a pretty large percentage of peds who are killed or injured by moving vehicles happen to be drunk when they get hit....
If I was hit by a bus, you'd find my cell next to my body too, because it's usually in my pocket or clutched in my hand regardless of my occupation or non occupation on it. There isn't a logical conclusion to her phone being the villain.
And, as a side note. Does a cell phone make you suddenly invisible? One person distracted does not equal all distracted.
Beav,
It's called witnesses! People saw her with earphones on. Others tried to tell her not to cross. Obviously she either couldn't hear or just ignored them because her little conversation was more important.
dumb beav - sorry for what obviously makes me a complete idiot -- I read from the gothamist post above:
"the Post says she had been standing on the double yellow lines between Second and Third Avenues"
Said nothing about witnesses. I see you have more knowledge than I, you must be the president of Mensa.
Gothamist posts are considered news as much as Fox News can be. You need to go out and do your own research before opining. Otherwise Jen Chung becomes the Queen of lemmings.
Saw a girl get hit by a taxi crossing from the Port Authority. Stupid is, stupid does. She gets hit, but manages to continue to hold on to her phone and the conversation.
We all jwalk, but stupidity reigns supreme, sadly, it seems women do this a lot more than men.
