Cellphone Mugging

2006_02_airgun.jpgIs the Upper West Side a new hotbed for cellphone theft? On the heels of news that rap impressario Damon Dash sent some of his men to scare some thugs who bullied his son and stole his cellphone outside the Dwight School, it turns out two 15 year olds mugged a woman of her cellphone yesterday. The two boys used an air pistol that looked at like a gun (and is used in target practice) to get the cellphone; both were later arrested. The Post notes that the robbery rate for the neighborhood increased last month, but it still surprises Gothamist that West 71st Street between Amsterdam and Columbus at 5PM would be a place for someone to strike. We guess that's why they would - no one would expect it, especially when they are yakking on their phone. Perhaps having headsets and just talking to air is better - you can look crazy, instead of showing off your phone.

And it's usually better just to hand over your cellphone, though one man refused to do so and was shot twice.

Good question - I'd think the resale market for iPods is better.

I think I would either snap my phone in half or throw it into traffic..but then again you can have my phone cause I will be hunting you down courtesy of satellite..

Have a phone reported as stolen and it can't be used again, really are thiefs getting that stupid?

You need a computer to transfer tunes to an Ipod.
Maybe there's a black market overseas for cellys, probaby not since they get cooler cells than here in the US.

From what I've heard there is not a big resale market for iPods. Most of the thefts are have-not teens taking them from teens or others who do have them.

if i yakked on my phone, i'm sure the would-be robber wouldn't want it.

if i were yapping, oblivious to my surroundings then i can see how i'd be an easy mark.

re: gabe.

i would imagine whoever steals the phone gets rid of the SIM card.. wouldnt that basically make it a new phone?

Re: Sam L

An iPod can be sold for close to what was originally paid for it, even after the next generation is released. The same goes for most Apple products. Just check over at eBay.
