Stonewalled

Two local goaltenders took the ice yesterday for their respective countries and both played brilliantly. The problem for the U.S. was that Henrik Lundqvist played a little better than Rick DiPietro and Sweden won the game 2-1. The U.S. certainly had their chances; two 5 on 3 power plays, but they were unable to score. The loss while disheartening does little to damage their hopes of advancing to the quarterfinals. Unless Latvia can win and make up a huge goal differential deficit, the U.S. should play Finland on Wednesday.

Things weren’t all bad on the ice for the U.S. Olympians. In Ice Dancing, the team of Belbin and Agosto used a strong performance in the original dance to move from sixth place to second. They will try and win a medal tonight in the free dance. Meanwhile, the U.S. Men’s Curling Team won again improving to 6-2 and clinching a berth in the medal round.

In other sports, Germany took gold in the Two-Man Bobsled. Marian Timmer of the Netherlands won a speed skating gold in the 1,000 meters and Italy took home the cross-country relay gold. All of the other skiing events were postponed because of bad weather.
