Holy shit-- remind us never to walk on Canal Street again. According to this extremely scary crash map put out by Transportation Alternatives, getting hit by a car is almost guaranteed! Transalt compiled the map from stats put our from 1995-2001, so the street may have gotten slightly safer since then (seems unlikely, given what we observe in our daily crossing going down to GothamistHQ.) They also have stats for the other five boroughs. Here's a challenge: can you find a street that's more dangerous than Canal (and Queens Blvd does not count-- it's too easy!) Be careful out there, folks.

Without looking, I'm sure Grand Concourse is much worse than Canal.
Not to mention us cyclists hitting cars - I slammed into someone side mirror one day and almost got doored as well. Serious street!
wonder if those canal street accidents would decrease if there'd be less crap sold on the sidewalks...
Canal is particularly dangerous at Broadway because cars make left turns onto Broadway and pedestrians walk as soon as the light changes, instead of waiting until they have a walk signal.
Fordham Road at Webster Ave. (56) is particularly, as is all of the Grand Concourse. 125th Street, 96th, 8th ave. 33rd & Park had a whopping 118 injuries. Damn.
