Walking in a Melty Wonderland

2005_02_snowmelt1.jpg

It's drip drip drip in the city these days, and the mountains of snow are melting, thanks to Mother Nature's sunny disposition - and the Department of Sanitation's cool snow melters. These orange monsters melt up snow and then inject a more liquidy mixture directly into the sewers - we know this from yesterday's NY Times article. Next up: The DoS figures out how to suck all the slush from street corners! Weather-related ails other than walking in slush: Home and business owners who didn't shovel the snow off sidewalks were ticketed yesterday and car owners keep getting plowed in. And be careful of falling ice or workers pushing snow off awnings - we've gotten nailed by that a couple times by now. Better that than pigeon poop, though.

Check out Tien Mao's series of photographs of snow melters, front ender loaders, and DoS employees working together. And while Uggs, or, in our case, faux Uggs (fUggs), are an affront to society, they do a damned good job of keeping the feet warm and dry.

could gothamist PLEASE hire a proofreader already?

Here come the Grammer-Nazis...

Perhaps we should throw them into the snow melter. That will deal with them properly.

Maybe we're becoming British or something here in Gotham, just like the Brits go to hospital and university, we've got orange that pick up our snow.

It's gettin' bad in here...it's beyond just grammatical errors.

I wonder if they ticket the houses of the elderly if the snow was now removed from their sidewalks. Its not like they are fully capable to actually shovel snow or anything…

But then some people are just lazy.

Oops. Bad grammar Alert. Spare me Grammar-Nazis

"I wonder if they ticketed the houses of the elderly if the snow was not removed from their sidewalks."

Have I redeemed myself? I sure as hell hope so.

they're capable.

Re: getting plowed in: experienced New York car owners know to park on the left side of the street when a snowstorm is predicted. Sanit-trucks have their plow blades angled to the right, preferentially burying the unfortunate cars on the right side of city streets.

As for old folks, on our Park Slope block, most of us know our senior neighbors and shovel their walks. The sanit-police don't care about the age of the homeowner when they issue summonses for failure to clear walks. Nazis.

d--your remarks, hidden behind the anonymity of your tag, indicate a frightening and vulgar ageism. My 103-year old great aunt, who lives independently in the Village, will trip you with her cane and bite you with her dentures the next time you pass by.

I'll give you ageism: the sidewalks of the elderly are supposed to be maintained by enterprising youngsters knocking on doors and trying to make a buck by shoveling people's steps and walks. But kids these days are too lazy. Lazy I tell ya! Damn whippersnappers!

This is exactly why old people shouldn’t own homes or be allowed to drive.

All geriatrics should be shipped to the Florida penal colony where they should spend the rest of their lives under the sun.
