It's Manhole Season!

A reader writes:

Within 24 hours, I've been effected by two manhole fires, with the first killing my power on Flatbush in Park Slope yesterday, and the second blocking my lunch route on Rector St today. Has anyone else reported any, is there something going on?
Maybe it's the combination of tons of snow and pure New York City heat? Maybe the city ran out of manhole epoxy.

Manhole season started later last year. And a woman who fell from her skateboard was unwittingly tattooed by a hot manhole. But in Shanghai, people steal manhole covers.

We all should steal manhole covers too. A creative, albeit dangerous way, to limit congestion on thoroughfares. If you want to drive, then go ahead and take the risk. Most crosswalks and bike lanes would be left intact.

Who's with me?!

check out this artist who uses manhole covers for his art:

awesome stuff for those that like nyc inspired art

Salt and melted snow attack weak or old splice joints creating a sometimes explosive mixture or conductivity to cover. Tis the season.

he's lucky it didn't kill anything more than his power. Ungrateful little bitch.

There was something on fire under Rivington just east of Essex on Blizzard Sunday. When I came back, there were a few ConEd emergency trucks that had the street closed off and were working on it.

Perhaps the blizzard was some kind of "War Of The Worlds"-like coverup for the beginning of an invasion.
