Feds Try to Deport Woman - And Make Her Miscarry, Too

Over the weekend, the NY Times had a story about immigration officials trying to deport a 7 year-old Canadian-born boy back to Canada - even though his mother is an American citizen (and after seeing the article, immigration officials decided to let him stay). Today, there's a story about a Chinese woman that immigration officials are trying to deport - and how their treatment of her could have caused her to miscarry her twins. Backstory: Zhenxing Jiang and her husband Tien Xiao Zhang live in Philadelphia with their two American-born sons and have run a restaurant there for ten years; Jiang was denied political asylum in the U.S. (claiming China's one-child policy was too strict), but her husband's case is still on appeal. According to Jiang's lawyer, last week, Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers drove her from their Philadelphia office - where her husband and sons were waiting in the lobby - to JFK Airport. Without telling her husband and kids. Allegedly, they did not give her any food and ignored her complaints that she wasn't feeling well. Once at the airport, she finally got medical attention (perhaps because she was in a public area?) and found out at a hospital that the two fetuses she was carrying had died. The Times reports that there will be protests today in Philadelphia and New York about the ICE's treatment of Jiang, and City Councilman John Liu spoke out against the ICE. Where will conservatives stand on this one? Which issue will they stand for, the loss of human life or deporting all immigrants? But this cannot be good for the feds - trying to deport little children, making women miscarry. For shame!

And according to the lawyer, Jiang has "disappeared." We assume she was taken in by a sympathetic family.

Illegal or not, if she has two American-born sons, i thought that was legal for her to stay?

Wait a sec,
Two children born in the US And run a business without any public taxpayer assistance and they deport her now?
I hope they took pics of the fetus' and haunt those agents for years to come. At least, put some Chinese voodoo on them.

Wow, this story brings Gov't stupidness to a New Level.

Horrible about losing the twins, Hope she's ok.

That is so unfortunate - the poor lady was probably horribly frightened and in shock, and for a ludicrous reason! This just goes beyond bad judgement and has damaged the family beyond repair.

Protests? There ought to be burn-baby-burn riots over this b.s. For once I wish someone would play the victim card. The political impotence of Asians is astonishing, especially given the economic might one would think should empower them.

I know this is merely one frightened illegal v. THE MAN, but how I wish there was a high profile Asian leader who would speak out (and be heard) in this situation.

Why is it we hear about understaffed polling booths in black districts hundreds of miles from a media center, but when the same thing happens in Brooklyn-Manhattan-Queens it falls on deaf ears?

This story happened in Philly and involved a federal agency, but take a look around you. 1 MM Asians, the fastest growing demographic in the five boroughs, and yet an Asian has NEVER been elected or appointed to a citywide office. Go figure.

The terrorists have won.

Gov't officials can now get away with complete dumbass shit in the name of Natonal Security.

It is a shame so many govt. workers happen to be flat out stupid.

I am deeply disturbed by this story.
Anger, frustration, and dismay round out the emotions I'm feeling toward the country (federal agencies, overall) that has provided much for families like mine (NYCHA & public education). Asians living in America have long since been without voice, and whatever the reasons may be, will continue to lack representation. We grow in numbers, just not in arenas of political or social influence.
Also, who are our allies? While there are few figures such as our City Councilman Liu who fight for justice and express outrage when Asian people are slighted, does he have support from his fellow Council members. Are other ethnic communities in our corner on the fight against such incompetence and disregard by government, on a grand scale?

The family is disheartened, but I can only hope they are not broken. We must show strength against adversity, for the good of all people.

FYI, even if she has two American-born sons - she technically cannot be sponsored by them for a Green card until they turn 21. That's the way it works here, folks. I'm always amazed how few people realize this.

OHHH, so that explains that.
Then, of course, give her a break and have her medical needs taken care of. We'll call back in 6 months, thank you masa.

I bet she's in NYC trying to find a white guy. =D ,Good for her!
