The snow has slammed the streets, but mass transit is the way to go, according to the Mayor. Unless, of course, you happen to take the LIRR to Penn Station - there's suspended service between Penn Station and Jamaica, Queens. Or had to wait an hour for a subway train to come. While we're glad we don't own a car and have to worry about that (we saw at least three cars that couldn't move in the snow - each with at least six helpful onlookers trying to give advice on how to get out), Gothamist is somewhat freaked out about the weather for the week, because it's supposed to be above freezing later on, and given the subway's experience with too much water, we hope the snow doesn't melt too fast - it was already a huge mess in some stations.

How was you commute? Did you have any problems other than dealing with people's huge coats? And one day, we know someone will faint from wearing their heavy coats as they stand on hot platforms and hot train cars.

My commute was totally normal this morning. I gotta give props to the Staten Island Ferry. They run through every kind of mess and get me where I need to go.
i'm not a big fan of Hummers, but i'd be lying if i told you I wasn't envious seeing them plow through this snow
It was fun despite the mountains of snow. Getting over the snowbanks at intersections was the worst, but I made it - walked over 2 miles to work. Gotta love waterproof boots for those lakes of melted snow.
There was and is no service on the M line in Queens. I have an hour and a half subway ride to the Bronx as it is. So I called in and explained I wouldn't be coming in. The thing is, so many people apparently do not even realize the M line exists. That's what I get for living and working where I do. But as a teacher I would merely be babysitting today anyway since so many teachers and students will be out.
Does anyone know how the rest of the northeast fared in all of this? I'm just wondering if we were the only ones who got slammed.
Some kind of "underground fire" at 65th/5th held the m66 up indefinitely. No one was directing traffic away from the transverse road at 65th, so everything just stopped. It would have been a nice walk except for the giant icy puddles everywhere.
Anyone hear anything about this fire? No news about it online, or maybe I'm just not googling correctly...
the L was pretty brutal yesterday (i later found out there were service disruptions), but it seemed okay this morning.
