People Are So So Dumb

OMG. Now, Gothamist knows that people are totally insane and make stupid decisions, but this story takes the cherry: The Post reveals that a tip about a bomb threat at LaGuardia last year was because a teenager wanted to make her flight to Atlanta - because she was worried her boyfriend there would fly to Minnesota to confront one of her ex-boyfriends. You cannot make this stuff up. Anna Tarasov made the threat while she was en route to Laguardia, and the feds traced the call to her cellphone. And what's more, even though her flight had its passengers deplaned, checked for bombed, and reboarded, she still missed the flight! The only barely redeeming thing Gothamist can find in this story is that the subway "made her late" - which makes us wonder about better transportation options to our area airports. Actually, taking the train to Newark isn't too bad (once you get to Penn Station or a PATH station), but is Airtrain really working for us? And what about options to Laguardia, besides the train to the bus?

On the upside, the federal government looks like it will give billions of dollars to the city's plans to extend the LIRR to Grand Central and the Second Avenue Subway.

i think the airtrain works for people near penn station. and traffic to jkf is so bad that you at least get some peace of mind when taking the airtrain.

to lga from manhattan, i like those busses that leave from around grand central.

i just take the LIRR from atlantic/pacific in brooklyn to the airtain. 10 bucks to get to the airport in about an hour? yes please.

everyone should be showing up at least 90 minutes before their flight, i dont understand these people who come running up to the gate during the final boarding call.

The LIRR - Airtrain route is really good for JFK. So long as there are no worker strikes (!) you just get on a scheduled train for Jamaica and you're at JFK within, oh, 30-40 minutes with no need to worry about traffic. Now if only we could get that sort of service to LaGuardia....

Took the Airtrain for the first time last week to JFK. From Park Slope to the terminal in less than an hour for $10...can't complain about that. By contrast, my car home (because I was feeling lazy) was $45 and took just as long.

Still, having come from Chicago, where both airports are served directly by trains (no special transfer and no add-on fare), it sure seems silly that the MTA doesn't have the same thing going here.

And yet somehow Amtrak can't make progress on high-speed rail between cities of sizable populations separated by 400 miles or less...

an easy way to get to laguardia is either take the N or W to Astoria Blvd. and catch the bus, or just take it to Dittmars and catch one of the car service guys who wait under the station (they'll take you to the airport for $10).

I hope they threw the book at her. What an idiot.

after trying to turn in a rental car at LGA once and get back to crown heights, i gave up. now when i travel i just factor in the extra money for a car service.

so, what up? did her boyfriend make it to minnesota or what??

I took the LIRR to Jamaica ---> LIRR for the first time over the holidays - it totally rocked!

To get to LGA, you can either take the N or the W to Astoria Blvd. and then get on the M60 bus there (it goes through the airport), or you can take the 4-5-6 to 125th Street and get on the M60 there.

Can anyone explain to me how the Airtrain that cost 6 Billion dollars to build and $5 dollars for a ten-minute ride is any sort of improvement over the old JFK shuttle-bus system?

You can also take the E train to Sutphin/Archer/JFK Airport and take the Airtrain from there.. I've found that to be the easiest (and cheapest) way, and it's also quite fast from Manhattan.

Getting to LGA from Midtown isn't too bad on the Q33 bus, which is usually less crowded than the M60--the Q33 connects to the E/F/G/R/V/7 (E & F are express in Queens; local 7 only) at 74 St-Broadway-Roosevelt Avenue. There are elevators in this station even, although they're still not running despite appearing to have been done for quite some time now.
