Well, stick a fork in Monday Night Football, because just about the only thing you might recognize next season is the theme song and maybe Hank Williams, Jr. Only a few short days after Al Michaels called Superbowl XL, ABC and Michaels have parted ways. Michaels has been with Monday Night Football on ABC since 1986 and was reportedly reluctant to move to ESPN's MNF coverage after most of the MNF team decided to move to NBC's Sunday night coverage. It is expected that NBC Michaels will soon announce that he is joining their coverage.
Replacing Michaels on the new Monday night broadcasts will be Mike Tirico, who will be joined by Joe Theismann and Tony Kornheiser as analysts. Theismann was previously an analyst on ESPN's Sunday night broadcasts and Kornheiser, a Washington Post columnist, is the co-host of ESPN's "Pardon the Interruption."
For our part, Gothamist will be muting the Monday ESPN broadcasts. Theismann was bad enough already and now with Kornheiser - who is great on PTI - joining him, it's sure to be a very loud broadcast. NBC's Sunday coverage will feature Bob Costas in the studio and John Madden doing in-game analysis. Cris Collinsworth, who has been sitting out a year from NFL coverage, was reportedly being groomed as a play-by-play announcer, but with Michaels seemingly headed to NBC, that might be dead in the water. What NBC should do is put Michaels, Madden and Collinsworth all together to form a formidable team that might be better than any others out there.

as much as i think madden overdoes it at times, he's still a decent play by play. i'm just not sure he could share the spotlight, that's the only problem. that or he takes up too much space in the booth. they would need a super wide lens to fit a three-person team in the shot.
Edit this....you refer to sunday night football on epsn, they have monday night football. oh blogs
but espn does have sunday night football. well, did this past season. and they will have the monday night broadcast.
With the new "flexible" scheduling, Sunday night football will be the one to watch. Monday night is going to be very, very bad.
To slurp Tony: maybe if ABC had hired Kornheiser instead of Dennis Miller 5 years ago we wouldn't be in this mess!
I have never known anyone, or read a comment by anyone that liked Theisman. Can someone explain to me why ESPN is so clueless as to put the guy in the sacred chair?? Mad, Mich, and Col would be strong on Sunday nite. Sunday will be the Caddy Crew, Monday the Dune Buggy Dudes..... Korn is funny, but man, his voice can get old fast......
We should all be thanking our lucky stars that Jay Mariotti isn't involved.
Agree that Espn's flavor of MNF will be a disaster and that Michaels/Madden/Collinsworth would be a great team. Collinsworth is good at analytical details and Madden paints beautifully with a broader brush. Please, no Costas - I like him in other shows, but please not this.
