Eight Bars You Can Smoke at in New York City

2006_2_smokingbars1.jpg

Amy at NewYorkology has gone ahead and updated her list of bars you can smoke at in NYC. We've taken this info and mapped it using Wayfaring-- seems that the bars cluster in Midtown and Downtown. Smoking has been outlawed in New York for more than two years, and for good reason: smoking is bad for you, and you shouldn't do it. Of course, if you do smoke, you're probably not going to limit yourselves to these eight bars-- maybe we should also add all the secret places where you can smoke and the owners look the other way. Suggestions?

Circa Tabac is pretty cool, nice setting and all, but be careful, they'll charge a $2 "clipping fee" if you light up a cigar that you've brought in (some kind of legal... thing...). Hudson B&B is also cool, but they'll charge the clipping fee for everyone in the party, even if only one person lights up (at least they did to us once).

I'm just going to say this here before we have idiots come on here posting this stuff..... PLEASE, PLEASE do NOT post your secret places to smoke cigarettes indoors. Gothamist is plastered all over Google, and cross-linked to every major blog in NYC. We don't need the smoking gestapo shutting down our favorite places.

is it just me or have a lot of bars gotten more lax about smoking lately? seems like it's going on all over brooklyn after midnight.

Real McCoy on Staten Island, they always look the other way...though the place is a true dive.

Wow, secret cigarette & double agent both posted my thoughts exactly.
Yeah why would those of us who are into a smoke at the bar want to share this info. on the internet???
Some NYC places have gotten lax, you just have to know about them. Really, it's not hard. But I'd rather not be asked to clue in the clueless.
That list linked from newyorkcology sucks, btw. It's all like, midtown old men's cigar bars & hookah lounges. I'll leave that list for the tourists who want to feel like they're doing something 'illict' by smoking @ MYC bars.
What's up w/that newyorkology site anyway? Really blah design & content. It is suposed to be like someone from the midwest reviewing things they saw in NYC? Yuck. That list should just stay on that site & Gothamist should just stay AWAY from that site.

I have not now, nor have I ever, smoked a cigarette in a bar in New York City. Never.

You can smoke at most of the bars in Red Hook after 11pm

This is true of bars all over New York City. In the last year, I've smoked in bars in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens after 11 p.m. In many cases, the tip-off that it's okay is the bartender lighting up. In others, it's a "buzz"--the same kind of buzz you hear when a famous person enters: "It's okay...you can smoke...look people are smoking."

The New Yorkology list is not correct: you cannot legally smoke at Kush. On the other hand, you can smoke at 40/40, Velvet Cigar Lounge and Merchants NY on 62nd St.,none of which are mentioned.

re: dude - wow, you make light of "inc" "TM" "starbux" and "yuppies" all in one post! THAT'S SOME INTENSE ANTI-GENTRIFICATION THERE BRO. REAL UNIQUE.

Thanks for the heads up on Kush, Curt. Just talked to the manager and he confirms they have a license to allow smoking, but they choose to allow only the hookah. I've updated NewYorkology.

All of you bastards need to be rounded up and forced to breathe nothing but your filthy exhaust in a sealed room until you're all dead. Smokers are pathetic junkie weaklings, and we will find you and get you all in the end. Smoke up and die, scum.

We know, we know, we're worse than Hitler, we've heard it all before, blah blah blah...

"Die, scum"... sure am glad you anti-smoking activists have our best interests at heart.

I didn't know hudson bar and books charged a fee if you smoke your own? I didn't remember if I was charged it when I was at the bar and only ordered Manhattan's.

I should have been more specific... I don't smoke cigarettes, I'm a cigar guy. The fee thing might be different for cigs than for smokes.

First they got weed turned into a monster. Now tobacco's next on the list. In 10 years there will be arrests.. then it's onto coffee.

Anti-Smoke obviously has never experienced the pleasure of a post-coitus cigarette.

The fact that the smoking ban is still a debate nearly three years later definitely says something. It seems as though there are a number of people who live in New York, who actually purchase and smoke tobacco cigarettes in a social setting. Amazing.

Please don't post your favriote places. The cops have learned to read and they love handing out big citations. The smoking ban while healthy for the public is an intrusion into peoples life. I think it's like wearing a seatbelt. If you want to fly out your window at 60 mph that is your choice. Expecting the goverment to babysit you is damn stupid. Take responsibility for your life. Seems you can't do anything these days without some hassle, citation or person above declaring what you can and cannot do!

"Die, scum"... sure am glad you anti-smoking activists have our best interests at heart.

No Tim, We have our best interests at heart. We've written you smokers off as hopeless.

And to the other guy... if the first thing you think about after great sex is stuffing a roll of burning dried leaves into your mouth, you're the one who has some pretty f*ed up priorities.

This is not about drug legalization. It's about pollution and manslaughter. I really do not care if you shove an entire pack of cigarettes into your mouth at one time and smoke the damn things like that obsessively until you're dead--in your own free-standing house. The problem is when you insist on doing what is the atmospheric equivalent of a male cat spraying in every single place you can find. Even in apartment buildings, smokers and their rancid addiction send that stench into other people's units, and that is every bit as unacceptable as forcing people to breathe your poison in any other public space.

Build closets in your homes/apartments; smoke inside of plastic bags; knock yourselves out (literally) if you want to. Just don't do it near people who actually want to live.

Anti-Smoke, the debate is about a neighborhood bar owner who chooses to smoke himself, and has two employees who both choose to smoke themselves. It's ridiculous for YOU to walk in like you own the place and impose YOUR personal preferences onto PRIVATE PROPERTY OWNERS. You make even Republicans sound reasonable.

A smoke after a good fuck is quite good. Many of us aren't Puritans, and take pleasure in these things that aren't really good for us. A lot of other New Yorkers feel the same way.

Florios also allows smoking - not in a secret illicit way, they're legit and worthy of being on the map.

Who da fuk wood wanna go to a stinkin smoking bar? Maybe ya mam wood. I'll go ta yo mama's fuking funeral and yors. Yu'll gonna die a paneful death wit a butt in ya hole. Asshole.
See ya at ya funeral.

Hay stinkee Da truth be told.
Smokas is junkees, addicted to shit.
Betta to do grass At leest ya kan git offa dat.

Y'all stink. Ya klothes stink.
Ya homes stink. Yo mama stinks.
Ya hole stinks yu stink

Hey,

Nice site. For the anti smoking idiot's information, check out the history of the Nazi regime and how Hilter was ANTI SMOKING! The Hilter youth was to be uber healthy. Doesn't the anti smoking mantra sound like the rantings of a tyranny pathetically twisting junk science (the second hand smoke "research")?

If we smokers were all native americans and tobacco use was part of a religious ceremony would the ACLU stick up for us then?

Lol sin, to enjoy a post coitus smoke, one would first have to have coitus. Is this a personality which could charm the pants off anything? Anti-smoke, you must be a joy to be around. Do those who must associate with you pack a supply of anti-venom? If I didn't smoke, I would take it up just to keep you away -and maybe irk you a bit ; ).
