Type Like a Graffiti God

We're pretty conservative with our font choices: here on Gothamist, you're not going to see anything besides Arial, Verdana, and maybe a little Trebuchet. Still, once in awhile we want to dazzle up a Powerpoint slide with some fonty goodness-- and for that we love using graffiti fonts. One problem: good graffiti fonts are in very short supply. We've always fantasized about having a repository of fonts by the greatest graffiti artists of the last 20 years, available for download at a reasonable price. That was just a crazy dream-- until now! Check out Handselecta-- it's a classy graffiti font foundry-- currently stocked with five fonts by Sabe, Joker, Mesk, and Mesh. More writers are coming on board every day-- we can't wait to see that ESPO font. The fonts are priced starting at $45, and prices increase up to $90 if you want all the variants. [Related: BrooklynKid's original graffiti font is still available for download at $20-- it's probably the most popular graffont in the world.]

Graffiti fonts bastardize the art of typography and the art of graffiti alike. They're perfect for those who crave mediocrity.

please, for the love of God, stop using arial. Use Helvetica, it's the real thing.

Graffiti fonts are awful because they cannot work as well as actual graffiti handstyles. The handstyle is about the word as a whole; it's about how the letters go together. Graffiti is calligraphy, fonts can't be a substitute for the artist's hand.

That said, these are some damn fine graffiti-style fonts. The joker one is superb because his style lends itself to fonts. That uppercase R is fabulous.

Brooklyn Kid must be destroyed.

I, for one, use Brooklyn Kid on all my letterhead.

The grafitti fonts are awful looking.
I am partial to Toronto Subway, which is based on 1950s Toronto Subway signage. I wish someone would come up with the IND tile sign font.

We here at Gothamist love that Toronto Subway font, but it look [sic] like Futura! Graffonts and map mashups are best! Rich columbia grads like us love it all!

Gothamist loves bragging about what school we went to and being as WHITE as humanly possible! Post what school you went to and where your favorite place in the city to buy fonts is! And don't forget to misspell something or leave out a word here and there! AND MAKE IT WHITE!

that brooklynkid font is an embarassment to anyone that uses it. I see that crap on club flyers, promo CDs, and seeing that font is all I need to know that whatever they are promoting is garbage. and yes, graffiti fonts are harder to create than most people understand because that in any good graffiti handstyle, each letter will look different based on the letters that come before and after it, and the other types of letters in the word as a whole. some of the fonts on the handselecta site look promising, but all of the good ones (GIANT, ESPO, SPONE) say "coming soon". we'll see how quickly they make their way on there.
