Men of Steel

It was a strange night in Detroit as Pittsburgh made three big plays and used some terrible clock management by the Seahawks to win their fifth Super Bowl 21-10. Hines Ward was the MVP with five receptions for 123 yards and a touchdown and Jerome Bettis added 43 yards on 14 carries in his last football game.

Seattle’s defense dominated the first half of the game, holding Pittsburgh to only 93 yards, but they could not stop them on third and 28 when Ben Roethlisberger connected on a 37-yard strike to Hines Ward to setup Pittsburgh’s first touchdown. It was one of the few highlights for Roethlisberger who had a game to forget, going 9-21 and throwing two interceptions.

Willie Parker took the second play of the second half 75 yards for the longest touchdown in Super Bowl history and Pittsburgh had a 14-3 lead. Seattle answered when Kelly Herndon returned an interception to the Pittsburgh 20 and Matt Hasselbeck and Jerramy Stevens hooked up on a 16-yard touchdown.

The third big play was Antwaan Randle El taking a reverse and throwing a 43-yard touchdown to Hines Ward off of one foot. It was a great play and seemed to suck the life out of Seattle. They got the ball back two more times, but couldn’t manage to score and Pittsburgh had their “one for the thumb.”
