Over the past year we've heard of way too many incidents of equipment being stolen from bands. We just received an email from a reader asking about a possible theft (from this weekend?):
Have you ever heard of a club called Trash in Brooklyn? I heard a story that a band got all their equipment stolen from their U Haul after doing a gig there.
We wouldn't doubt it. So far over the past year The Decemberists, Brian Jonestown Massacre and Black Mountains gear has all been stolen. Apparently the latter bands stuff is currently being sold on Bedford in Williamsburg.
The Raveonettes had their gear AND their van stolen late last year, and Burnside Project (who is playing our show on Wednesday) has had their stuff stolen twice in 6 months. We just thought of a good idea for a band van security service.
Has your band fallen victim to the harsh streets of Brooklyn and it's troupe of equipment stealing thieves?
UPDATE: This just in...
I'm Nicole from the band Baker. I believe that reader was talking about us. We played Trash Bar on Saturday night and parked the van and UHaul on Metro (I think, anyway it was like right around the block), had a few beers, and we realized everything was gone after the trailer popped open on the way to our lodgings (we're from Boston). Let us know if you hear anything. For the most part, as much as I know, we lost:
white Fender Jazzmaster and a Fender amp
red drumkit (I dunno the brand)
Yamaha sunburst electric guitar, and another amp I'm not sure about
Juno 106 keyboard
Fender Telecaster
PA system
bass amp head
Concertmate keyboard
and a shitload of every other thing you need to play shows with. We, as a band, are completely wiped out for the time being.

Doesn't this warrent a Chung-ism about how bands should "be careful out there, and work insurance into your band expenses?" Come on!
Diamond Nights also recently had their van stolen in Long Island City.

Don't forget Sonic Youth!
The lock on our van got picked almost politely during broad daylight in Dumbo last summer and a guitar and bag of effects were taken. Renters insurance covered that theft almost completely.
Suffice to say 2 years ago, our rehearsal space was broken into and my Les Paul nicked. The space was apparently illegal (unbeknownst to us), so the landlord begged us not to file a report. We promptly left the space.
In my mind, that landlord still owes me a grand.
Hey, whoa...sucks that this happened, but aren't you kinda giving Trash a bad rap by displaying their logo, etc. in association with a (rumored!) theft? It's not the club's fault, after all. Trash is a decent place that treats bands who play there very well. This kind of thing could, unfortunately, happen anywhere.
SERIOUSLY WHERE'S JEN CHUNG AND HER: "BE CAREFUL OUT THERE" RANTINGS???
on a sep. note: she's so hot!
Hate to be a dick - but any musician who leaves there equipment unattended in a vehicle, locked or not, is just asking to have it stolen...I have only lost one amp but have had my car broken into on two other occasions when I left what I considered valueless out in the openin the car. I also am wary of leaving my equipment in a venue unless a band member is present to keep a watchful eye over it....
That's Bedford Avenue, which also happens to be Brooklyn's longest street (it goes all the way down to Sheepshead Bay). Bedford Street is in the West Village, off of Christopher Street.
Get one of those circular, heavy-duty padlocks. Those things take a chainsaw and ten minutes to cut through because of their unique shape. They're more expensive than the traditional "U"-shaped padlock, but it's a lot better than having your things stolen.
Also, get insurance! You're parking your van on Williamsburg's Southside at night, after all. Although the neighborhood has been cleaned up from violent crime, but break-ins, burglaries and petty theft are still quite commonplace.
Only stupid people leave their gear in a Uhaul in the WillyB and leave to get beer. Come on. It's got nothing to do with Trash at all. You just fucked up.
I think they found the guys that stole all the gear here:
