Penang SoHo Closed!

2006_2_penang1.jpg

Walking up Prince Street this morning, we noticed that Penang had closed! Long a stalwart source of Malaysian food for the neighborhood, this left us feeling a bit sad. Luckily, there's always Kin Khao and the other Kelly and Ping places located nearby-- while they serve Thai, not Malaysian, we've always used them as close substitutes.

I believe the Penang in Chinatown is still around. I have never been a big fan. Overseas Asian on Canal is much better and cheaper malaysian.

The sign begs the question: "Which area code?"

the best place for malaysian food - better than nyonya even - is still the place on the corner of east broadway and rutgers (F to east broadway station). there's a huge red sign with chinese words on it, and it's english name is 'Happy Joy' (altho that's printed on the menu, not on the storefront sign).

$6 for a gigantic dish of rice noodles with seafood and pork in egg-drop sauce. mmm-mm.

there's another Penang on 2nd Ave and 83rd

Ah yes, Penang, the icon of bland, American-ized Asian food.

Penang is a chain. There's also one on Amsterdam Ave. in the 70s and I think there's one in the East Village too. So save the "mourning the passing of a great little neighborhood stalwart" tone for a merchant who deserves it.

This is fitting. I just broke up with a boy and our first date was there. Hopefully this doesn't start a trend.

this has been closed for ooooh, about a month, maybe more.

That sucks. It was a nice place in the area.

How is Kelly and Ping? I pass one on 3rd and 25th most days of the week. It took the space formerly used by "Jimmy's House" which moved accross the street.

Closed several months - & the other aforementioned Penang is on Elizabeth just north of Canal. Nyonya on Grand St. really is amazing. I'm glad no one mentioned the hideous Fatty Crab empire in this post. I have such a problem with that place. A Malaysian food fan's biggest disappiontment....

Kelly and Ping is more Americanized mediocre cuisine. Not bad in a pinch, but not worth going out of your way for.

uh who really cares about what goes on in SnowHo anymore anyway?

oh, btw...very nice live preview on the comments...its new to me. :)

Great sleuthing, guys. Maybe next time instead of covering some lousy generic chain restaurant that you didn't notice closed for how many weeks/months, you could cover something like New York Milkshake Company and see if they're closed for good or just have papers up on their windows for no reason.

Sub G: NY Milkshake on St Marks closed for good, some type of "automat" food place is moving in. see NYMilkshake.com:

The Original NY Milkshake Company is no longer located at 37 St. Mark's Place.

We are currently moving to new locations that will be opening soon at:

West 38th Street - NY Waterway Ferry Terminal

Battery Park (Pier 11) - NY Waterway Ferry Terminal

i hope they will still make grilled cheese.

yeah, gothamist, if there's more than one location obviously it's a "Chain" and not worthy of mention.
As for Milkshake Co it's probably the latter: Paper on the windows for no good reason. Makes sense to me! Had a multiple roach encounter @ Kin Khao (on one visit) but the food was tasty (and thankfully not crunchy).

Penang's ii-ght, but waaaay overpriced. Nyonya's a "meh". My favorite Malaysian's Skyway at the corner of Allen and Canal.

saying thai cuisine is a close substitute for malaysian is like saying greek and italian are pretty much the same. silly white man.

Thanks for the info mikey! Sad sad news about the milkshake co, will miss their green tea ice cream waffles... any more info on this automat? Maybe will not be a total loss...

Scout: You are a retard. The point was it was "lousy" and fairly generic, not that it was a "chain" (but happened to be one). The part about "paper up" "for no reason" was a joke you didn't understand, because you're not that smart. Chuck Norris and the devil appreciate irony more than you do. Retard
