'Devil for Life' Has Number Retired

2006_02_sstevens.jpgLast night, the New Jersey Devils retired the number of former defenseman and longtime captain, Scott Stevens. Stevens, who played 22 seasons in the NHL retired last September after 13 seasons with the team. His #4 is the first retired number for the franchise. During his career, Stevens appeared in more games than any other defenseman, and is 5th in games played at all positions. He helped lead the Devils to Stanley Cups in 1995, 2000, and 2003.

After the 37 minute ceremony (Messier's retirement ceremony was 77 minutes), the Devils went on to shutout the Southeast conference leading Carolina Hurricanes, 3-0. The shutout was Martin Brodeur's 80th of his career.

As a gift for his retirement, the Devils presented Stevens with a bow and arrow, a trip to Napa Valley, an engraved Tiffany crystal and a luxury pick-up truck. The Devils will also retire Ken Daneyko's number in March.

I love how the Devils have won more Stanley Cups than the Rangers have since 1940, and the Devils have been around less time, even if you include the time they were the Colorado Rockies and Kansas City Scouts.

indeed. i was listening to one of the shows on wfan the other day and one of the hosts was saying how if stevens, daneyko and brodeur would have done the same thing for the rangers that they did for nj, then they would have statues erected in their honor on 8th ave.

And don't forget the pathetic victory parades in the Meadowlands parking lots. That was just sad.
