Groundhog Day Means WNBC Wacky Antics

Toby at Random Observations captured this great moment in local TV news: Sue Simmons doing her best groundhog impression during the Live at Five broadcast, writing, "It is something that I always look forward to every year." When Gothamist caught the 11PM broadcast, Chuck Scarborough created quite a fanfare for Simmons to repeat the impression. And suddenly we realized that while WNBC mentioned Punxsutawny Phil, they neglected to mention another Chuck - Staten Island Chuck who predicts an early spring. At any rate, this is why we love local news.

Gothamist on Chuck (the human) and Sue's silver anniversary of anchoring on WNBC together.

There was a rumour gping around about ten years ago that Sue was a lesbian, not that there is anything wrong with that. If she is I don't care, if she isn't I don't care.

I remember when Letterman's studio was next door to live at five and he would pop in with their camera trained on Sue with Hearts popping around her.

Shows she has a great sense of humor. Anyone who would kiss studdering John is cool.

Maybe this is why Sue is still single after all these years.

  • She left Live at Five today after around 20 minutes or so because she was "feeling under the weather" and Chuck Scarborough filled in. I have never seen anything like that before.

Sue is one of the reasons I watch WNBC, sure she isn't a hottie like WABC's Liz Cho or the babe parade on Fox 5, but she has been there for as long as I can remember and there is sort of a comfort factor, plus she is funny when she needs to be and serious when appropriate. She is also a New Yorker, unlike a lot of the TV people. I even don't mind that she is a Mets fan.

I hope she is feeling better soon.

Sue still looks fab after all these years.

  • Oh, Sue... if you didn't exist, we couldn't invent you.

I remember last August, she let go with: "Hot, sultry, and sticky, but enough about me, how's the weather, Janice?"

Where would we be without Sue Simmons? God lover her.
