what if the system is to be smashed? what if someone is trying to beat your head in and your trying to get into your apartment..Say you get the guard pissed cause your tipsy and he doesn't let you in..

I agree with Lucy, as my building has one of these as well. It adds virtually no real security, just a sense of one. It achieves nothing that installing a few cameras doesn't already. And of course it's nice and slow since every entry is now a series of telephone calls.

My middle-class building is constantly striving to be the Dakota. Last year, some of the board really wanted to hire a flesh and blood doorman (which we don't need anyway), but opted to go with the "affordable" Cyber, It's ridiculous and time consuming. We already had cameras/buzzers in our apts. Now we have to wait as the non-english speaking delivery man struggles with the Cyber-lady in midtown.

Before this comes to pass, I'd like to see a Gothamist interview with the Gil Perez, the dapper, white-gloved, mustachioed doorman at Christie's on 49th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues. So charming! (even to scruffy hipsters like me who visit to gawk, not buy)
