Flora and Red Lobster

2006_02_35dboys.jpgThere are only six designers left on Project Runway, and their task was a doozy: Designing a dress for a garden party from plants and flowers in the Flower District. Well, the dresses weren't ENTIRELY made out of flowers - they used muslin and mesh as bases to attach flowers and leaves to, but you get the idea. While the challenge was interesting, it actually made for pretty boring TV in Gothamist's book. This episode was far better for the awesome social interaction between the remaining designers. For instance, the boys of 35D went to take pictures on the roof of the Atlas. Chloe teased Daniel about being so good at everything (he said he wasn't good at basketball). Chloe asked the guys when they came out and Daniel admitted he only came out last year. And Santino got busted for his Tim Gunn impersonation. You know, Santino truly is a mad genius - the story about Tim Gunn and Andrae going on a date at the Red Lobster is so twisted, it's brilliant.

Most of the designers used plant leaves for their dresses, as they were concerned with materials that would hold up after a day and a half, which disappointed the judges. [More, including spoilage, after the jump...]

As always, Tim's blog is a treat to read - we thought the judges were being pains when they kept bringing up how the contestants didn't use flowers, and it turns out, Tim was annoyed too! Check out this: 2006_02_karadress.jpg

For those viewers and readers who speculate that our judges are privy to the designers’ activities prior to the runway judging and/or that I interact with the judges and provide background information for their decision making, let me put all of that to rest. If that were the case, then the judges would have known why the designers didn’t use more flowers. "Where are the flowers?" was our judges’ mantra. I wanted to call out from my folding chair in the back recesses of the room, "You can’t expect the Tournament of Roses for $100!" Shut up, Tim.
So cute. This episode, all the dresses were actually quite nice, if nothing we'd want to wear. And Gothamist almost takes back everything bad we said about Kara, because she actually designed the most beautiful dress (pictured)and was very nice to Chloe - she helped finish Chloe's dress for a spell in the name of girl power.

Daniel's dress was very elegant, and we loved the basketweave, but the fern skirt was boring. Santino's dress had the most color, but we do think it was overshellacked- no matter how much Heidi loved the shininess. Chloe's dress was elegant - as usual - but also boring. We loved the idea behind Andrae's topiary dress, but it did look awkward on the model. We didn't like Nick's dress that much, but we did like the use of the big leaves. The guest judges this episode were Badgley and Mischka, and they loved Kara's and Daniel's dresses. The judges, in the end, awarded Daniel for using fresh flowers to great effect and knocking out Andrae for making a "door mat" of a dress. Nick was second to last on the runway, and we really thought it could go either way.

Anyway, this challenge's win gave Daniel immunity for next week, which means he automatically makes it to the final four. What's interesting is that Daniel only graduated design school three years ago, and yet he's making such strides in this competition with elegant and wearable clothes. With Andrae out, we're thinking Daniel and Chloe will make it...and if Kara does well next week, she could sneak in. What do you think will happen?

No way Kara makes it. I feel like the judges have the endgame in mind this season. I mean, Nick really had the weaker ['vulgar,' huh?] showing, but I feel like the reason he didn't go home was because he is stronger than Andrae overall. Kara is nowhere near as bad as Wendy Pepper, but if she makes it to the final three, it will be a crime.

My guess is that Kara will be out next week, then

Nick, since the judges seem to have consistent complaints about his work, even though I really like his work. But coming in 4th should still give his career a big boost. Unless, of course, they get sick of Santino's unwearble designs, but that doesn't seem likely. I'm thinking Daniel will win the whole thing, though it could be Chloe. Given several months to put together a collection, Santino will probably come up with some pretty hideous outfits.

Santino's Tim & Andrae routine had me laughing so hard I was crying.

Did anyone catch the Project Runway article in the Metro paper today? It was part of the "Fashion Week" features.

Today's article interviewed Tim Gunn and three designers: Nick, Chloe and Santino. The article focuses more on the behind-the-scenes exploits. Although it does not explicitly say that they are the final 3 designers, I can't help but think that Metro inadvertently outed the three as the finalists, considering the placement and tone of the article. Interesting.

I'm liking Santino more and more (the red lobster killed). And I was hoping he would win, only because I wanted him to win immunity. That way he could deliver on his promise of doing something really crazy and over the top. So interesting about Daniel's dominance in the past few episodes because in the first couple, he was very much under the radar.

Last season, Kara Saun seemed to win most of the competitions, and even though Wendy Pepper was "eh" throughout, her collection was pretty solid, if totally not for me. So, who knows?

And I did not see the Metro interview with Santino, Chloe and Nick! I'll have to look for it on the subway floor or something.

"What happened to Andrae?" God, I can't take Santino at times, but that was so good. I think Tim Gunn and Andrae should do an interview at the Red Lobster.

There's a video from episode 8 on the Bravo website where Santino does Tim Gunn doing Nine Inch Nails' "Closer." Absolute solid gold.

I had never seen this show until a caught an old episode this past weekend. That one episode sucked me in for the entire marathon and I made sure I kept up by watching last night. Even my completely hetero, non-fashionista husband got sucked in.

Anyway, I too was laughing loudly at the Red Lobster tale. Seriously, where did that come from?!

Daniel's designs are so great, you can actually picture them on real women. I particularly loved his Banana Republic dress. I usually love NIck, but last night's dress really was a disappointment.

And so sad for Tarah, the model. Zulema really messed things up for her.

I think it should be Daniel, Chloe and Santino in the final three. And, so far, the judges seem to be leaning that way.

PR is the best.

Loved Daniel telling his coming out story. Nick was all like "young thing yo kiddin' me....you came out to your parents LAST YEAR....I could see that in my day but come on". Then he said his ex-gf still didn't know and Chloe is like "My WORST fear!". BTW Daniel is on Friendster.

Anyway, I grew up 20 minutes from his village. It's a great place to move away from.

We were doing projects around the apt Saturday and had the PR2 marathon on all day. In retrospect they have made pretty good endgame choices this year. Daniel F trumped Santino's lingerie collection, but he clearly has talent. No doubt the drama factor helped him at that point (producers can overrule the judges). I thought about that last night; hated seeing Andrae out, but Kara had her best comp ever, and Nick should stay over him.

Last night I wanted to scream "They had $100!! You don't buy flowers on 27th Street when that's all you have!"

Eithee Daniel or Chloe would be worthy winners. He has the inside track, but I feel like he's going to have his own line regardless. I would love to see the owner of Lot 8 be able to move her design studio out of the garage. I love her sillouettes, great lines, and I'm totally crushing on her. Daniel is a class kid, though - super mature and balanced, great eye, out of this world talent. When someone is that good right out of school you gotta give him his props.

I'm hoping for Daniel, Chloe and Santino in the final 3. The judges are in love with Daniel and Chloe, so they're pretty much in. As for Santino, I just want to see what kind of crazy-ass stuff he comes up with for Fashion Week. By the way, Daniel graduated from school just last year, not three years ago...which makes him even more impressive.

i'm not a fan of daniel's...mostly because he lacks creativity. chloe's designs are predictable, yet there's some classy element to her work. although santino is obnoxious, i feel that he is definitely over the top and creative.
