Reinventing the Avenue

2006_02_arts_livablestreet.jpgImagine Manhattan streets with less cars, buses and exhaust and catered more towards pedestrians. It sure would have made walking around during the transit strike a bit nicer. Tonight Livable Streets: A New Vision For New York opens. The exhibit aims to explore new concepts for our city streets, such as turning them in to pedestrian-friendly public spaces. On display at the Urban Center, the exhibit launches the New York City Streets Renaissance Campaign — a collaboration between The Open Planning Project, Transportation Alternatives and Project for Public Spaces.

Forget about accommodating to the ever-increasing traffic, THIS exhibit offers innovative, people-focused solutions to challenges facing city planners. Compromising by balancing the needs of drivers with the quality of life of residents and visitors, the city’s streets can be reborn as as a venue for socializing and urban exploration. View some examples of what the streets could look like here.

Now, what can we do about that annoying car alarm that goes off outside of our window every morning?

It's not a new concept. My copy of "New York 1960" has several proposed plans for making many streets pedestrian only.

I went to this today. It had some incredible facts about traffic and streets as well as nice pictures. That and the MAS building is incredible. It makes me want the City to be a nicer place to walk and a nicer place to live.

I just checked this exhibit out today. I admit I am a bit of a museum geek but this was really neat. I have not given much thought to streets as public space but walking home, I really could see streets as lost commodities.

It's about time. most people walk in NYC, strike or no. why not apportion and manage our streets for walkers?

I hear that Ethan guy at PPS is really cute.

Believe it or not, calling 311 works perfectly against car alarms going off. If you call them what happens is they will connect you as a non-emergency call to an operator who dispatches the cop cars, and when the next cop car is free in your area, they come and the alarm-noise stops. Maybe the police have a universal alarm-turning-off device like the remote that eventually turns off any brands of TVs... all I know is that it's worked for me and is a blessing at 3am (or anytime)!

as i've said before.. i don't think they should start pushing for these pedestrian plans until they make it so that taking public transport (trains or buses) is more efficient than taking cars.

also, of course, if they do that, lots of people will stop driving everywhere :)
