We heard a rumor this morning that our favorite place to procure grilled cheese sandwiches, tomato soup and a nice game of Connect Four...has closed down. We just received final confirmation and, well, our world is shattered. Grilled Cheese NYC had to shut its doors due to a rent hike.
Grilled Cheese opened its doors there in June of 2000. On their site the GC team has left this note:
We had a great run here. The building was sold, the new rent is slightly outrageous. So we're moving on. It's a push in the right direction. We are scouting locations presently.
Likely some new crappy bar will open up in its place on Ludlow Street, and hopefully Grilled Cheese will find a new home - and fast! Until then, check out some grilled cheese recipes here.

This was the best restaurant in town. If it doesn't re-open somewhere else I vow to never play Connect Four again.
I usually try to turn off the copy-editing portion of my brain when I'm not at work, but the possessive form of it does not take an apostrophe! I know I'm being a dick, and that grammatical errors are part of Gothamist's charm, but when I see it three times in a short post, it scrambles my eyes!
what!? no! but.... the blackjack! and the sweet potato fries!
I never got to try this place! Arhhhh!
...not that I ever eat grilled cheese sandwiches anyway. But still.
I like the grilled cheese spot on 9th Ave (around 45th?)...
their cheddar tomato soup tastes like spaghetti o's!
I don't even really like grilled cheese sandwiches, but i did the time i went there.
heard that ludlow guitars is taking over the space, expanding with a recording studio in the basement.
there's reportedly a regulation ping pong table holding court in there now. good luck getting a game.
They should open a cart on the street for lunch time traffic!!! the cheesemobile...I never had a chance to try it!! I passed it a few times and said..next time..next time..Hope they find a new place!
I'm a big fan of Comfort Diner's "grilled cheese month" where they serve a different grilled cheese sandwich for an entire month. Lots of wacky combinations like gouda on pumpernickel.
re EJC: i believe you are thinking of Amish Market. the tomato cheddar soup is TO DIE FOR.
How can any think their grilled cheeses were good? I went there hoping for something imaginative. Some kind of obscure cheeses being used perhaps. Nope. Well then at least do the damned grilled cheese correctly. It's made panini style in a 'George Forman' grill. Dry. Hello? Butter both sides and grill on a skillet for chrissakes. What's wrong with you people. Terrible letdown.
I hear the Market Diner, an 11th Ave institution at 43rd Street is also gone, leaving 11th Ave with no classic diners. It once had the River, the Munson and the Market.

adam, your such a stickler! ;)
I think the one on on 9th is "say cheese!" between 45th and 46th. its slightly different than grilled cheese nyc but definitely really good.
How can you be DrunkatNYU and not like grilled cheese? That's such a seminal drunk food.
Yea, actually this post made me make a grilled cheese last night and i remembered how much i like them when i eat them. But when i'm drunk I'm more of a falafel/slice of pizza/street vendor food kinda guy.
The grilled cheese with a side of tator tots at Trailer Park (W. 23rd) is yummy!
Any update on Grilled Cheese? Did they find a new home? I ate there each time I visited the lower east side. So sad...
