Arrests in Cop Beating

2006_01_hernandez.jpgThree men suspected of beating off-duty police officer Eric Hernandez (pictured) at a White Castle in the Bronx were arrested. Edwin Rivera, Nelson Rodriguez, and Daryl Massey apparently knew Hernandez was a cop before beating him repeatedly; the White Castle surveillance tape released by the police led to tips about them. While battered, Hernandez had crawled outside, only to be shot by another police officer, Alfredo Toro, who thought he was one of the gang members. The NYPD believes that Officer Toro's shooting was justified; the Times points out that Toro hasn't been interviewed yet and that Commissioner Kelly is shifting attention to Hernandez's health. He was shot three times, once in each thigh and one in the stomach - the Times said "arteries feeding his lower limbs were shredded, flooding his abdominal cavity with blood." And as many papers have noted, Hernandez was a star on the NYPD's football team.

The three men were charged with assault. With this story, plus the other high-profile ones about fatal pedestrian-car accidents and the crumbling Administration of Children's Services, someone commented that it felt like the city was slowing getting out of control. Gothamist thinks the city is actually fairly under control, so that any mildly sensational story gets a lot of play. What do you think?

I think his shooting was more of a Tragic accident than anything else.

As for the state of the City: I think the recent number of high stories are more coincidence than the norm.

The real problem was with these mooks who beat him up. We have got to get into the heads of these criminals to discover what makes them commit violent acts. Drugs? Rage? Dissatisfaction?

Boredom??

If they knew the victim, maybe it was just something Personal?

I hope he recovers.

Wait, what? You hope who recovers? Recovering from death's pretty tough.

Officer Eric Hernandez.

Did he die? The news reports say "Critically Injured".

Funny how everyone is blaming Alcohol in the system victim. Like cops don't drink after their tour. Give me a break. What about St. Patrick's day????
When was the last time you saw a crazy drunk hispanic? (compared to the occurances with other races)

When was the last time you saw a crazy drunk hispanic?

umm...sunday morning..friday night 4 train..

Yesterday the NY Times was fretting that Hernandez was breaking the rules by drinking beer before he was beaten and shot. Today they wring their hands that the guys that beat him up are being 'scapegoated.' Prison for them will be almost like a permanent visit to white castle. They should just relax and learn to enjoy the years of 'free sodas.'

Kevin,

I remember an old NY1 story on the Tokyo subway and how it seemed that vandalism and deliquency among youth was rare if not non-existant. (Not even grafiti or scratchiti among a Japanese youth culture quite caught up in a worldwide old-skool-hiphop revival.)

If its possible to bring crime in NYC down dramatically (and I'm someone who thought that would have been impossible), then it might be possible to find root causes of vandalism, violence, and deliquency.

Perhaps we need to see what the Japanese (among others) are doing right and how to apply it here.

My 2 cents
