East 14th Street Hit and Run Questions

2006_01_hitrunphoto.jpgA funeral service was held yesterday for NYU grad student Hannah Engle, who died over the weekend from a hit-and-run on East 14th Street. While her family and friends mourned, there are some interesting new details about what may have happened. CBS News reported that some prosecution sources say Wole Parks, who was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, driving without a license, and DWI, "wasn't speeding, and he had the light." Further, that though he had been drinking, when he turned himself in at a Greenpoint police station hours after the accident, his blood alcohol was normal. Plus, Engle did not have the light when she was in the street. Sounds like it may have been a terrible mix: Bad, impaired driving along a busy street and people going about their usual business of jaywalking.

Why does it matter? Hannah was one of my best friends, and she was certainly my most energetic, optimistic, generous, and fun-filled friend. I miss her dearly, as do all of our friends, her mother, sister, and the numerous people she inspired and touched throughout her life.

We don't care about this guy or what happened. We only care that we tragically lossed someone we love so much.

Come on. The guy was driving with a suspended license and had been cited for driving under the influence before. Occam's Razor applies here.

More like drunk man who won't take responsibility for his actions kills high achieving, kind, generous, giving, smart young woman. I knew her. Shame on you.

This guy is scumm. He's been in trouble before. Here's his made up story. "I was driving along at 5 miles an hour . Suddenenly this person jumped out in front of the car and I accidently hit her." Asshole. There were 2 other witnesses that saw you driving at excessive speed without your lights on. Why did it take you four hours to report the incident. Your scum lawyer advised you not to report it until you were sober.

He turned himself in because he left the car at the scene, so no matter how far he ran the car will eventually lead to his name as a suspect.

To answer the question with another: Why did he turn himself in? Parks probably freaked, and ran, probably not being sober didn't help in that judgment. Thankfully, he did turn himself in.

    Terrible situation all around though.
