BREAKING: WB + UPN = CW
Rejoice all you fans of Gilmore Girls / Veronica Mars slash fiction! Your dreams of saphic teen-friendly erotica are one step closer to fruition with the merging of the WB and UPN networks. CNN reports:
Warner Brothers and CBS Corp. announced plans Tuesday for the creation of a new broadcast television network, called CW, that would replace the WB and UPN networks in the fall of this year.No word yet on what will happen in the NYC market; presumably either channel 11 or channel 9 will host the new CW network, and the other will have to switch to a new format. Our suggestion: have NY1 take it over-- why should subscribers to Time Warner cable have all the local news fun?The new broadcast network will draw on programming from both WB and UPN, and will be a joint venture between Warner Bros. and CBS (Research), with each company owning 50 percent, officials of both companies.
WB's 'Gilmore Girls' will be one of the shows on the new CW network, officials said. "This new network will serve the public with high-quality programming and maintain our ongoing commitment to our diverse audience," said Les Moonves, the chairman of CBS, in a statementThe new network will broadcast such UPN shows as "America's Next Top Model," "Veronica Mars" and "Everybody Hates Chris," as well as WB programs "Beauty and the Geek," "Smallville" and "Gilmore Girls."

I know that News Corp. owns the WWOR station (UPN9). Maybe they'll just show Fox News on it or something.

Veronica Mars is one of the best shows on television, hands down. It is constantly hailed by critics, but it unfortunately is being broadcasted such a podunk channel as UPN going against Lost. When Lost was a rerun its ratings went up 35%.
Hopefully it will be renewed next season and will flourish on this new network.
Isn't there something preventing NY1 from doing this? For example: NY1 can't be seen if you don't have Time Warner (like with me with my DirecTV- I miss NY1)
WPIX-TV//Channel 11 will be the network affiliate for the CW Network. WWOR//Channel 9 will go independent afterwards.
Can we go back to the good, old days of having an independent WWOR again? Although I actually preferred WPIX. But still, it was great having WNEW, WOR and WPIX, all independent. Has anyone looked at the archives of 70s NYC video over at TV Ark? Those were the days.

My favorite show is One tree hill on the WB. I dont have cable and would be really upset if i couldnt watch it. It is a really good show and i hope CW keeps it because there are a lot of One tree hill fans. I hope its on channel 64 still or something besides being on cable cus i dont have cable!!!!!!!!! PLEASE KEEP CW ON 64 AND KEEP ONE TREE HILL
I really hope they keep the wb11 morning news. I guess they will because WWOR-upn9 don't have morning news. Oh yeah, this whole merge is a waste of time, they're better off not merging. Everybody know one station is going to have more power, I hoping wpix-wb11 due to better programing.
Just an update, in case nobody else knows:
WPIX-TV-DT (Channel 11) will become the NY DMA's CW affiliate starting 9/5/06.
WWOR-TV-DT (Channel 9) will become the NY DMA's "My Network TV" affiliate. My Network TV is a Newscorp.-owned network starting operations on the same day as The CW. It will offer limited amounts of programming, and hopes to compete with The CW.
As of now, neither channels are carried in HD by DirecTV, TWC NY, or Dish Network. They will, however, continue to be carried in SD (normal) TV on those services.
It is not yet known whether My Network TV will offer HD programming.
