Fire in SoHo at 575 Broadway

A five-alarm blaze hit a historic building in SoHo last night that injured six firefighters and one civilian. The fire was brought under control this morning by 198 firefighters and 44 units. 1010 WINS is reporting that the fire is being called "suspicious" as it started in a utility room and spread through the building's ventilation system. The historic 575 Broadway, estimated to be worth $15 million, is home to the flagship $40 million Prada store designed by Rem Koolhaas. The building structure is safe, but a FDNY representative told the Post that "It's pretty nasty."

UPDATE 12:15pm [Jake]: just walked by the building. Lots of windows blown out on the middle stories in the front and back, with glass all over the sidewalk on Mercer Street. The Prince Street side of the building seemed fine-- and there was no smoke marks or obvious exterior damage besides the windows anywhere on the building. On the Broadway side there were still tons of fire trucks and police vans, but people appeared to be going into and out of the building. The Prada Store had its windows covered, so it was impossible to make out damage, but we saw a bunch of people walking into and out of the store, presumably checking on things. The American Eagle store had its doors open, but was closed to customers-- didn't seem like there was any real damage inside, but maybe things got wet.

UPDATE: The good people over at Verbose Coma have some pictures from inside the building. You can clearly see that there will be some serious damage to the Prada store, which was also rumored to have received $5 million in merchandise in the past week.

Huh? 15Million for the building but the store on the ground level is worth 40 Million? Maybe the building is 150 Million?!
This building is also the home of Brandt Publication. Interview Magazine is in this building. Crazy stuff.

There were a lot of people taking pics. Especially since during all of this you could still pretty freely walk around, and IN the Prada store. It was pouring water from the ceiling. Everything in the building is ruined. I have no photos but we took video. Nuts.

I think the work done to the Prada store cost $40 million - but the building/land itself was quoted in the Post as being worth $15 million (but perhaps not adjusted to 2006 market value).

So crazy.

Jeesh! I was in a building across the street and heard all the (annoying) sirens but didn't check it out or think anything of it because it didn't sound any worse than all the other times the masses of emergency trucks have come hollering by.

Okay, I posted our pics from the inside of the building on Verbose Coma.

City assessor's estimate of market value = $15,300,000 (e.g., taxable value = 6.85MM, the property taxes are $790K).

128,000 sq ft
100 x 200 x 6.4 FAR

88K office, 40K retail

Fair market value? $800 /sq ft = $102.4MM

I used to work on the 3rd floor from 1999 to 2004.
Part of that floor has collapsed.

The 3rd floor had original Warhol's on the walls and I remember seeing an original Haring piece on the top floor service elevator.
