After much talk, the Mets finally got together with the Orioles and made a deal yesterday, sending Kris Benson to Baltimore for Jorge Julio and John Maine. Benson, who just completed the first year of a three-year $22.5 million contract finished 10-8 with a 4.13 ERA last season, his first winning season since 2002. With the hard-throwing Julio, the Mets now have even more back-end bullpen help for Billy Wagner. Julio, Baltimore's former closer, was 3-5 with a 5.90 ERA in 67 games last year and will setup Wagner with Duaner Sanchez who the Mets acquired earlier in the Jae Seo trade.
The move also saves the Mets about $5 million a year in salary and opens up a spot in the starting rotation. Aaron Heilman anyone? Some other names mentioned are Maine (acquired in this trade), Brian Bannister (a rookie), Alay Soler (Cuban defector) and Yusaku Iriki (a 33 year-old righty from Japan).
Not one to keep her mouth shut, Anna Benson spoke out yesterday about why her husband was traded, "If they traded Kris because of what I've done, then that's a dirty, nasty, rotten trick." Anna Benson has recently considered posing for Playboy. At least it wasn't sex in the locker room, sex in the parking lot of Shea Stadium, or her "doing" everyone on the team after Kris cheated on her.

The Mets have now traded two of their more successful staring pitchers last season, and more importantly, two of their younger ones. Martinez and Glavine are a year older. I hope Heilman can step up and be a consistent starter, which he has yet to do.
Benson suffered from poor run support, a complaint of all Met pitchers going back to "Little" Al Jackson. He was traded because Omar and Freddie don't want a naked Met wife in Playboy. Plain and simple.

What's funny is that Anna is a bigger deal in the press than Kris - and she's just a model! Poor Kris, lucky Kris, you pick.
