Whale Envy From Across the Pond

2006_01_whaletale.jpgThis is so unfair! Londonist tells us that there's a whale in the Thames! Is the Thames that much cleaner than the East River or Hudson? Hmm, nevermind. We have seen harbor seals in the city (in the Gowanus Canal, stranded in another part of Brooklyn, or just hanging around downtown), but never before murky images of a whale. We imagine a shoe or body would clog up the whale's blowhole or that the toxicity of the East River would immediately reject a whale...the Hudson, we're not so sure, but down here, it is an estuary. We could imagine one closer to the Statue of Liberty, though.

Update: The whale is bleeding! And apparently there are more whales at the mouth of the Thames! Even the Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott went to catch the whale tale! More on Londonist!

The whale in the Thames seems to be a bottle-nosed whale, which is like a very fat dolphin. The BBC's coverage is funny: "But at 0830 GMT on Friday, a man on a train called in to say he might have been hallucinating, but he had just seen a whale in the Thames." While animal authorities think the whale is doing all right, they are worried the noise and congestion on the river will stress him out. Or the photobloggers- we can't wait to see the whale on Flickr! This is what we found so far, tagged "whale" and "thames".

Isn't the Thames the river they tested and found out that British people do, like, 5 pounds of cocaine a day, each? Maybe the whale is just looking for a fix?

As Londonist's political correspondent, I saw the whale from my workplace, the Houses of Parliament at about 12:30

Imagine my surprise, when, sitting in the office, it comes on the news that there is a bloody great whale in the Thames outside.

I ran over to the Terrace (on the river), as did a load of other people, including John Prescott, and spotted the thing swimming around. It then buggered off up towards Chiswick.

Interesting stuff people, the first Whale in the Thames on record since 1913!

I saw a whale breech in the nyc harbor from the staten island ferry, once, a couple years ago.

Harbor seals have made it all the way up the length of Manhattan. I rowed crew for Columbia my Freshman year (03-04). When we arrived back at the dock one night, a harbor seal was waiting for us. The dock is on the Harlem river at the very tip of Manhattan, near the Hudson River. I can't imagine anything surviving at all in the Harlem. The seal seemed to agree as it was not eager to get back in the water.

The whale is looking for payback after killing his relatives..poor thing..nobody cares about our ocean friends..

MT: that cocaine story was about a city in Italy, after testing the river water sometime this summer (i think?), although i don't remember which city.
