Gothamist: Pataki's 2006 Budget Barely Addresses NYC

One suggestion I'd heard long ago was that upstate could be renamed "Buffalo" and we'd stay New York. We could also consider calling them "North York" and us New York, or we could be "Old New York" and they could be "New New York" (just kidding). Every territory within commuter rail or express bus range should join with the new city-state! Oh, and the Catskills for the water supply!

There actually has been some talk about this. We should split into two states, and they could be called "North New York" and "South New York." Let's see how well the upstaters do without us.

Why are we still a part of New York State? NYC on its own would be one of the largest and most important states, and then wouldn't have to deal with crazy hijinks like this! Let's split off, and take our hinterlands with us (Long Island, northern NJ, southwest CT).
