Map of the Day: Diaper-Change Map!

2006_1_daddytypes1.jpg

For years we've been reporting on the quest for restroom gender-equity-- the fight to change laws so women's rooms have more stalls than men's rooms, to balance out the advantage guys get from peeing standing up. Today's map deals with a similar, but no less important issue: the difficulty fathers have finding restrooms with changing tables. If you have a kid, you know this is no minor issue-- try changing a diaper while balancing a kid precariously over a sink! Daddytypes is a leading voice in this struggle-- and today's map of diaper-change friendly restrooms comes from him.

  • Here's a solution, don't take your kid to restaurants.

Nobody has mentioned the stupidity of that rule if it is applied to places like sports stadiums. If you've ever been to Yankee Stadium during a sold-out game, you will see very long lines outside the mens rooms, with the womens rooms largely empty. I've never counted, but that is presumably without "stall equality". It sounds as if the new sports stadiums will be required to make that situation even worse. This is one of those movements that sounds good and "fair" until you actually think about the practical impact of a one-size-fits-all rule that may actually be counter-productive in many instances.

To balance out the advantage that men pee standing up? How about averaging out the fact that you stand in front of the mirror for obscene amounts of time cackling with each other and addressing your physical insecurities?
