Farley PO Gets En-Added

2006_01_farleypo.jpgA couple weeks ago, Gothamist wondered what was going on with the scaffolding outside the James A. Farley Post Office at 33rd Street and Eighth Avenue. Sure, there must be restoration work of some sort, but it looked very Christo, as it is a huge building that takes up two blocks. Now the Daily News reveals that the scaffolding is being offered as advertising space. That's 21,000 square feet of space! The space will be available from March till the fall, and Maura Moynihan, who is trying to rally the efforts to turn the post office into the Daniel Moynihan Station (her dad was a strong supporter of moving Penn Station) that will house the LIRR and NJ Transit, gave the plan her blessing, telling the News, "Anything that helps get the jackhammers moving to get the Moynihan station on track is fine by me."

Did anyone ever stop and think..........who was James A. Farley..........why is this beautiful building named for him by congress. Its sad how quickly we forget. Do your homework people....who was James A. Farley, what did he do for New York, the Postal Service, and the Nation.

Hint : Farley was Al smith and Roosevelts gubernatorial advisors and FDR's Presidentiol campaighn managers for 32 and 36. Farley ran for President in 1940 against FDR's 3rd term...in the Spirit of Thomas Jefferson...a true democrat.

Heh, heh, good luck with that.

  • The tearing down of the original Penn Station was a major act of civic vandalism done by greedy bastards from out of town. May all the historical buildings in that town get torn down and replaced with hockey rinks and other crap!~

I wasn't yet born whey they tore down the old Penn Station; but from what I've seen in pictures ... it was a beautiful building. Tearing such an amazing architectual triumph was a crime. Start renovating Moynihan Station already!

  • Hey, here's a wacky idea I got from Wacky Idea Quarterly:

How about covering that entire "ad space" with a HUGE photo of the old Penn Station. Let people see what was lost and let them see it in full scale.

The average person can appreciate good architecture when it's finished, but many New Yorkers don't have a clue what the big deal is. Let them see what was once there!

And then they can even look across the street and look at the junky MSG building and realize how things can be better.

That's only my opinion. I'm Andy Rooney.
