Direct automobile access to Governor's Island (whether by bridge, tunnel or car ferry) is not financially feasible, given that the deed from the feds prohibits the construction of parking facilities on the island, except for vehicles used to maintain it or transport visitors around it.

There was a planned extension of what is now the R line (Brooklyn's 4th Ave. line) way back when -- '30s or something.

And don't forget, the Port Authority was created to build a Brooklyn to Jersey rail tunnel, which is only now - maybe - on the horizon. (Off the orig. topic, I know, but related to the last comment.)

Governor's Island is something like two city blocks away from Red Hook. We could easily build a pedestrian bridge from there.

A funicular (isn't that what those "air gondolas" - I've never heard that term before - are technically called?) might be cool, but I'm a fan of ferries.

I mean, why not let islands be islands?

A big pole and a rope so you could swing over Tarzan or Spiderman style would be excellent!

A tunnel would be very expensive, and one to Staten Island extremely expensive. But it would be pretty cool. Cable cars would be neat!

Whatever it is, please, no automobiles. We've had enough of them. Their time is over.

i think that a narrow bridge for pedestrians only from the battery to governor's island would be great.

Here is a suggestion, if/when the Second Avenue Subway is built, have it go to Governor's Island. And then why not to Staten Island and hook it up with the SIRT.
