The Post reports that officials are considering building an "aerial gondola tramway" to connect Manhattan to Governor's Island. There's a huge effort underway to make Governor's Island a big tourist destination, and while nothing is set in stone for flying cable cars, the interim president of the Governors Island Preservation and Education Corp., Paul Kelly, says, "IIt could be an attraction onto itself because of the tremendous views" and that it would be cheaper than building a bridge. Sure, but what about a tunnel? Like an exit off the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel. Of course, Gothamist realizes building anything underground would be costly and a huge time suck - stringing up some cables and getting some gondola pods that hold a couple people is probably easier. Just make sure there are some life safety vests and flotation devices.
The proposed gondolars would "likely run from the Battery Marine Terminal in lower Manhattan to Governors Island's north end and then to a point near Pier 6 off Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn." There is also talk of ferry service to Ellis and Liberty Islands. Here's the Governor's Island.

Plus its a great new way for super-villains to threaten New York/Gotham City!
Here is a suggestion, if/when the Second Avenue Subway is built, have it go to Governor's Island. And then why not to Staten Island and hook it up with the SIRT.
i think that a narrow bridge for pedestrians only from the battery to governor's island would be great.
A tunnel would be very expensive, and one to Staten Island extremely expensive. But it would be pretty cool. Cable cars would be neat!
Whatever it is, please, no automobiles. We've had enough of them. Their time is over.
Mike, you're wrong about the time for automobiles being over.
After riding on the Palm Springs Aerial tramway I would have to skip it.
A big pole and a rope so you could swing over Tarzan or Spiderman style would be excellent!
Love the Ocean Park photo.
Governor's Island is something like two city blocks away from Red Hook. We could easily build a pedestrian bridge from there.
A funicular (isn't that what those "air gondolas" - I've never heard that term before - are technically called?) might be cool, but I'm a fan of ferries.
I mean, why not let islands be islands?
Don't you mean:
Governor's Island, The Ride!
Stalled plans for a Lower Manhattan - St. George, Staten Island subway tunnel are found in http://ntl.bts.gov/DOCS/lrp.html on page 86
There was a planned extension of what is now the R line (Brooklyn's 4th Ave. line) way back when -- '30s or something.
And don't forget, the Port Authority was created to build a Brooklyn to Jersey rail tunnel, which is only now - maybe - on the horizon. (Off the orig. topic, I know, but related to the last comment.)
Direct automobile access to Governor's Island (whether by bridge, tunnel or car ferry) is not financially feasible, given that the deed from the feds prohibits the construction of parking facilities on the island, except for vehicles used to maintain it or transport visitors around it.
