Bizarro Weather

This morning, both ABC's and NBC's morning shows had stories about the "bizarro weather" in the country, because when it's almost 60 degrees in NYC in January, it's crazy time. While some are predicting this to be the warmest January on record, some are wondering if this means our February and March will be bitter. No! We thought global warming would mean warmer all the time! One weather stats tracker on the Upper West Side pointed out to the Times that it was 66 degrees last January 14. Hmm, the January 14 that is tomorrow will be rainy, and January 15 is looking to be the in 30s. So maybe those trendy mukluks people were buying aren't so silly after all...no, wait, they still are.

People have such short memories. The first twelve days of last January were almost a degree warmer than the first 12 days this year. Tomorrow is going to be awful and the wind chill Sunday is going to be brutal. More later...

If you thought global warming was about everything being warmer all the time, you have a lot to learn. A better term is global climate change. Overall the Earth will be warmer. However, because of the way climate change affects weather patterns, some areas will be warmer while others will be cooler.

But keep spreading those myths about global warming and people will continue to ignore this serious threat.

well said benjamin. also, it's worth noting that models of how global warming will affect weather patterns include more frequent and extreme storms, which we've definitely seen in 2005.

Well said guys, after all the icecaps will melt and flood the city as soon as the 1980s!!!

Wait that didn't happen, because the environmental movement creates a new global threat every few years so it can raise some cash-because in the end they're about as trustworthy as the NRA.

It's called "false spring", a semi-regular regional warming that takes place around the second week of January. It's been scientifically studied since at least the mid 19th century, and (I'm guessing) was surely part of weather folklore long before then.

Nothing to see, move along...

Yeah, that's right. The environmental movement is creating all of this scientific research from international organizations that predict dire consequences of continued and increased carbon dioxide emissions. How's your tin foil hat doing, Max?

Yeah, in New England we call this January Thaw. It's happened pretty much every year as long as I can remember.

Yeah, those same organizations depend on tons of cash every year.....from suckers like yourself Benjamin.

The January Thaw, more of a cultural myth than an actual meteorological phenomenon, is usually said to occur at the end of the third week in January. It will be the subject of a Gothamist weather post in a week or two so stay tuned.

PS-

Oh-you also missed my point-they've been predicting doom with all this "research" since the 70's. Dire consequences from co2 emissions included-according to environmentalists earlier predictions, from the early 1970s......Manhattan would have been underwater in 1980. So far 8th avenue hasn't been used as a canal-how's YOUR tinfoil hat Benjamin?!?

user-pic

Max - can you provide a single reference to anyone saying Manhattan would be underwater by 1980? Good luck!

Dude, you're not even responding to my points. Get real. I would be happy to offer you links to the IPCC, a group of SCIENTISTS. These aren't environmentalists. They're actually doing research. They're not a bunch of treehugging hippies.

Good comeback though. Original. Tin foil good. Where did you ever hear that?

user-pic

I checked your link the IPCC-they're the guys who's report was changed by the UN in 1997-to show results that didn't coincide with their research. Nice try-more evidence that the "environmental movement" is run by special interests and primarily interested in our money.

I take it you believe in intelligent design also, eh, Max?
