NYC Nerds Rule Science Contest

2006_01_headoftheclass.jpgIt's that time of year again - when the semi-finalists are the Intel Science Talent Search are announced! The NY Times says that NY State "dominated" the list, with 140 students coming from the Empire State - and there are only 300 semi-finalists total. While Long Island's Ward Melville High had 12 semi-finalists (tied for the most with Montgomery Blair in Maryland), we looked at the NY State breakdown and think we found 24 semi-finalists from Brooklyn, Bronx and Manhattan combined. (If our count is wrong, tell us - we know you love telling us when we're wrong!) Looking at the public schools, there were six from Bronx Science, one from Brooklyn Tech, two from Murrow, one from James Madison, three from Midwood, two from Hunter, and eight from Stuyvesant. It's probably good times at Stuy, if only to love beating Bronx Science in another way.

Last year, there were no Stuyvesant students in the finals, which was cause for crying and a Daily News article about whether or not the elite public school was slipping. But a Stuy student did win the contest (back when it was the Siemens Westinghouse) in 2003.

Btw, Siemens Westinghouse != Intel STS.

Intel STS = Old Westinghouse. So Stuy hasn't one it since the 80s I believe.

There's a listing for Flushing, so maybe Queens high schools are listed by neighborhood?

Where did you dig up that Head Of The Class picture? I use to love that show!

how come theres no love for Townsend Harris HS (my alma mater) 4 kids from that school were semifinalists! and its a humanities school and not a science school to boot

K: It's my alma mater too (class o' 97). The majority of people I've met -- native NYers included -- have never heard of THHS.

Maybe it's because it was only re-established as a H.S. in the early 80's? *shrug* I have mixed feelings about the place, but I got a hell of an education there and it's definitely on par with its sister specialized schools.

greetings amsci! i was class of 99 i've probably bumped into you in the halls at some point =)

I definetely hated the school while i was there, but i've grown to appreciate how its prepared me for college, and life in general.

Nice picture, I am certain ARVID carried the team to victory.

Actually, the Siemens Westinghouse Competition is another prestigious high school science competition--based soley on the research that the student submit--so the Stuy student was the winner of that in 2003. This year's Siemens finals were held at NYU this past December (http://www.siemens-foundation.org/).

Townsend Harris is the most engaging school in NYC. Stuy is filled with slackers and drugies as my friends who attend put it. Last I checked the Times, Townsend Harris is the #1 school in NYC. So being a junior there, I would like to state that the majority of adults do not use proper grammatical english and believe "I says to him" is a proper sentence.

k,amsci,BYC: THHS class of 98 here! THHS has propelled from being strictly a humanities school to a very well rounded school. You're right to say that most New Yorkers don't know about Townsend Harris... it just seems that "brand-naming" education exists, even on the high school level. I'm in the process of interviewing some of the Intel Science candidates for admission to Columbia. I'll definitely be looking for the same well-roundedness.
