Coney Island Fire Kills Three Children

2006_01_fire.jpgLast night, a three alarm fire broke out in a Coney Island building, and three children, two young sisters (ages 5 and 9) and their 16 year old uncle, died inside their apartment. The fire is believed to have started in the apartment, and it does not seem suspcious; the girls' mother had run to another apartment for help. The children had been crying for help, but firefighters were unable to revive them when they made it to their sixth floor home. Over 130 firefighters responded, and it took over an hour for them to control the fire; a neighbor remarked that many of the firefighters started to look exhausted.

This is the second three-alarm fire this week (there was one during the day in Manhattan on Monday); here are tips on fire safety in your home from the FDNY.
