2006_01_arts_america.jpgART: DCKT Contemporary presents Exene Cervenka's first New York exhibition, titled America the Beautiful. The exhibit is comprised of journals and mixed media collages dating from 1974 through 2005 by one of the founding members of the seminal Los Angeles punk group, X. The journals combine rough drafts of songs and scraps of ephemera found while traveling as a musician.

COMEDY: Two sketch comedy troupes for the price of one! Likened to the combination of PB&J, chips and salsa and Simon and Garfunkel, it sounds like a comedic combo not to go untasted. First up is Cubicle Improv, described as those who "saw the faint light filtering in through the one small window at the top of our drab office places and said "Enough." Next is Skeeger, who apparently take "risks with their fearless blend of sociopolitical satire, broad slapstick, and other stuff so weird it can't be described with catchy buzzwords."

Saturday // 8pm // The PIT [154 W. 29th St] // $8

DAMN THE MAN: Out of Iraq Day brings over 100 events to cities nationwide this Saturday. Join activists at a town-hall style meeting designed to "turn the heat up on congress". Local speakers include US Senate candidate Jonathan Tasini, Charles Lenchner (Progressive Democrats of America), Missy Beattie (Gold Star Families for Peace), and Debra Sweet (World Can't Wait). Saturday // 1pm // Presbyterian Church [85 South Oxford Street, Brooklyn] // Free

SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT: Mulchfest is this weekend. It's time to ring out the holidays and bring your tree to a designated City park to be recycled into mulch. The mulch will nourish plantings across the five boroughs. Don't forget to take off your ornaments first, and leave that fake plastic tree at home please.
