Malay in the Meatpacking District - And Beyond

2006_01_food_fattycrab.jpgConsidering all of the Fatty Crab craziness going on at the edge of Manhattan's Meatpacking district, one would think that Chef Zak Pelaccio is the first to introduce the city to the wonders of Malaysian cuisine.

Not so. In fact, our fair city is rife with Malaysian fare - and has been for a long while. Some of Gothamist's faves include Chinatown's Nyonya, Elmhurst's Taste Good and Jackson Height's Malaysian Rasa Sayang.

So, if you can't get into Pelaccio's Malay streetcart cuisine palace, don't despair. Grab your Metrocard and catch Malaysian meal mania in another part of town.

I can't believe this. I just wrote a review on citysearch saying what an overrated mess Fatty Crab is!
Please, everyone: don't believe, (d-d-d-on't believe) the hype on this place! I just want to tell you that the reason why there is all this "Fatty Crab craziness" is due to the ENORMOUS amount of money these people have given their public relations company.
I have many friends in the restaurant industry and believe me, this place is SO not worth your time or money. Overated, overpriced, overspiced, cheaply done EVERYTHING. Horribly delusional.
I KNOW Malaysian food, the other places you reccomend are amazing - especially Nynona!!!!
You will enjoying everything there so much better: FOOD, PRICES, spaciousness, ambience, authenticity,...even celebrity sightings!

The best Malaysian is that place on Lafayette and Kenmare...

darn! asiatron and ally both beat me to it! fatty crab is over-rated. my friends and i went on opening weekend and we were underwhelmed by the food and service (omg, the service was horrendous). serving smaller portions and less flavorful versions of the originals do not qualify as a good idea for opening a restaurant. my vote is for nynona.

a restaurant called sentosa, on prince st in flushing, queens, is also a great place to go for malaysian food. fairly priced and atmospherically appealing, too!

Personally, I prefer a restaurant called, "Malaysia & Indonesia" in Chinatown. It's both good and cheap. http://newyork.citysearch.com/profile/7113313/

Thanks for the tip. I started to go to Sripraphai last night, but went to Malaysian Rasa Sayang on a lark. I enjoyed (ate too much of) the Lamb Rendang.
