It's official: Jon Stewart will host this year's Oscars telecast. Which means the Academy of the Motion Picture Arts and Sciences decided to go for crowd-pleasing ('specially in liberal Hollywood) political commentary, versus another year of cruel but insightful wisecracks from Chris Rock. Hmm, Gothamist likes Jon Stewart, though we downgraded him after the frat-party audience atmosphere of the Daily Show started to detract from the show, but he is better than Whoopi Goldberg again. Actually, we don't care as long as Bruce Vilanch is kept away from the writers' room and Steven Colbert is involved in the telecast - can you picture it, a "Colbert Report" on the evils of Hollywood?
What do you think of this choice? Gothamist predicts an arsenal of gay cowboy jokes, "Oy, I'm a Jew" lines, and probably some bits with Steve Carrell (did you realize The 40 Year Old Virgin was nominated for a Writers Guild Award?). But we did love Chris Rock last year - his joke about movie stars not being what they used to was totally spot-on. And will Jon Stewart be man enough to make fun of any of Sean Penn's friend? Hard to say!

Colbert is now my favorite guy outside of Conan.
"George W. Bush - great president?.....or greatest president?"
Jon Stewart will do fine and probably become a mainstay. only a few people can handle this type of gig. i never thought conan's humor would translate until he delivered on the Emmys. Stewart's is a lower key style which is probably ideal for that room. But since Conan is an NBC guy, would they ever allow him on ABC's Oscars?
But like it or not, they'd never lock Villanch away. Gil Cates is obviously into loyalty.
Stewart hosting the Oscars. Huh.
I bet we can also expect numerous (erm, at least one) references to Stewert's interesting film acting career. Oh, the Faculty...
I expect this year to be a hate-fest complete with stars lecturing about world affairs. I estimate that there will be a 70% increase in the use of thick black frame glasses being worn by the nominees in an effort to demonstrate their commitment and deep thinking on geopolitical strategy. Lectures will be articulated in a snappy edward r. murrow style. Stewart is the perfect host for this.
Too bad but Jon has jumped the shark; I guarantee he'll still kiss Sean Penn's ass at some point. Colbert is too cool for Hollywood, and way too smart.
Jump the shark? Jon Stewart?!?
You people are crazy - dudes like Stewart will ALWAYS be funny.
