Impressing Nicky Hilton With No Money

Santino in stilettos? Nerdy Diana getting down? Marla...acting desperately lost? Gothamist loves Project Runway so so much! This week's challenge was to design a party dress for a socialite - and impress her at a party. Since the show's been on hiatus for two weeks, we were thinking that it might be some really, random low-on-the-totem pole socialite, like some toilet seat manufacturer's niece. But the socialite was Nicky Hilton, aka the pretty Hilton (among many, many other things, Paris's lazy eye is scareeee), so the designers were all really excited. Highlights of the show: The designers competing in a walk-off at Marquee (this might be the gayest thing ever, and it was brilliant); Nick acknowleding that Santino is big competition; Emmett not saying much at all; a pregnant Heidi Klum looking more radiant than Nicky will ever be; and Tim Gunn, well, being Tim Gunn. Even Andrae redeemed himself with an actually lovely dress.

Who do you think should be in the final thre? At this point, Gothamist thinks the final three should be Chloe, Santino and Nick. And Television Without Pity notes that Santino does do a killer Tim Gunn impression, even if he (Santino) is a huge herk - it's like he's Wendy Pepper with cutting edge talent!

I'm thinking Nick, Santino, and Daniel V for the final 3.

Also, I can't believe they didn't nail Chloe for designing esentially the same dress she did as in the 'clothes off your back' challenge. Skimpy little turquoise and black dresses both times? Come on! At least mix up your colors, girl.

Santino is a bug-eyed & hirsute greaseball. I could sautee enough onions to feed Mizrahi w/ all the oil from that dude's skin. He's arrogant and his designs, while good, are the same same same same, with no real innovation.

  • James

Santino makes the same outfits every challenge. The same ruffles, the same braids, the same high waist. He's lazy and the judges never bother to call him on it. He is taking the fun out of the show for me, because he just does whatever he wants and no one cares. He's very insecure.

Emmett is always ignored by the judges, but his designs aren't that bad. He's such a calm presence, which is needed in that atmosphere. I loved the walkoff he did when he sauntered, hands in pockets, then turned and slowly took off his hat. He is much sexier than he realizes.

I like Nick a lot. He's funny without being mean. He isn't an egotist. He takes chances with his work. He's one of the best people ever on this show, and better than most of the people on reality shows now.

Zulema's head is too big. They should at least put her in the lowest 3 for one challenge, she has been safe almost every week. Her outfits are all badly cut and ugly to look at.

Love Daniel V. Chloe? Safe, boring. Already trapped in a box. I think she will win, because she is articulate (unlike Jay who is a loose cannon) and she will please the people who were upset Kara Saun didn't win last year. If she wins I will be disappointed. I want Nick to win, but I don't see that happening.

My final 3 would be Nick/Emmett/Daniel.

  • Santino rocks.

My final three are Santino, Nick, and Diana

I agree with Gothamist final three although I'm rooting for Diana. Her ideas are highly intriguing. Chloe's designs are cute and, yes, I agree that she probably fits the Banana Republic aesthetic better. If Diana wins, poor thing, she'll get stuck with boring BR.

  • Heh. Santino totally DOES look like the main space criminal from Superman II. He also talks out of the side of his mouth a la Katie Holmes.

  • Tim

By making Santino the winner, maybe they're just getting him all cocked up so that when he falls, he falls hard.

    He's a jerk.

Doesn't he look like those flying bad people in black shiny outfits from Superman II?

uhhh. what's a herk? is that new-speak for "hairy jerk"?

Re: Chloe: Yes, I agree, her designs are wearable and pretty. But so were Alexandra's. I think they are very much alike in that both are designing for themselves. But not really original and fresh. Also last night's design was a good design, but I actually thought it did not fit perfectly on her model.

Also, Chloe did the same thing that Wendy Pepper and Santino are being criticized for: selling out their teammate on the runway. And also, what struck me about Chloe was that she actually sold out Daniel BEFORE she was asked "Who should go?" After Daniel tried to defend his work, Chloe just jumped in there and offered unsolicited commentary about how Daniel wouldn't listen to them, etc. Fine, you're there to protect yourself. But then at the end of her episode, she was crying for Daniel, and frankly, I found that rather two-faced.

I laughed at Nick's Mexican kid selling gum comment.

I know Chloe's dresses seem boring, but the craftsmanship is great, elegant and wearable (sorta like Narciso Rodriguez). Re: her behavior during the lingerie challenge with Daniel - I think she and Kara were frustrated that Daniel didn't want to listen to them, and since this competition is about each person for him or herself, I understand why she'd fight in order to stay on another week but still like Daniel as a person.

And I do love Diana's love of science (if you read her bio, her favorite designers are Roy Eames, Richard Meier, and Maya Lin. I don't know if she can make it to the final three. I think Nick's really good (he's got a killer instinct, yet is nice), and Daniel V's tailoring is very impressive.

  • black girl superstar

Santino's an arrogant little bitch. I liked him in the beginning, but his behavior is downright awful and I despise him more and more every episode: the way he blew off Nick when Nick won the Barbie challenge (after he thought he won when Heidi just wanted to complement him), the way he basically sold out Emmett in the lingerie challenge (I swore his classless actions would get him sent home for sure, but, alas, I was wrong). I was mad when he won yesterday 'cause I knew it was gonna feed his ego even more. I mean, I know reality shows edit their content for drama, but then they can only work with what the contestants give them.

As for people I don't virulently despise, I like Nick, Chloe, and Diana (her geekiness is "quelle adorable!", but I completely understand when people say that her geekiness will likely be her downfall), and I've also become a fan of Daniel V. since the lingerie episode.

Daniel Franco blows. I'm glad he's eliminated. Santino has the most talent but I agree his personality could screw him.

  • PeG

Nicky is fascinatingly un-skanky and articulate compared to her older sister.

Chloe reminds me of Alexandra's sensibility: girly, sexy fun. But not much else exhibited. Also, she's so two-faced: jumping to sell out Daniel F. on the runway, but then boohoo-ing later about how she's sad that he was let go.

My favorite final 3 would be: Santino, Nick, and Diana.

  • Agree with Gothamist final 3, but I'm still upset over the Daniel Franco elimination. He was a stand-up guy, and his take-the-fall thing was touching.

Chloe seems nice, and she's a perfectly good designer, but her creations are too safe. Probably perfect for the Banana Republic job that's part of the prize. But why would she want that when she already "has a loyal following" in Dallas (according to the show, anyway)?

Diana makes some interesting stuff, but, mark my words, the whole reversed-polarity magnet thing was foreshadowing. She's going to get eliminated over some crazy huge debacle that comes as a result of her reliance on geekery.

I agree with gothamist's prediction of the final 3, although I wish it would be Daniel V or Diana instead. It seems that, based on face-time on camera, those 3 are the ones to focus on. Does anyone disagree that Marla is the next to go?

  • Last year at this point I had clear favorites. But this year I'm not connecting with the contestants the same way. However, I guess I'd say that Nick, Daniel V, and Santino are my favorites. I like Chloe, but I don't like the clothes she designs.

  • LAist loves Project Runway so much that we almost liveblogged it, but we'll wait until the finale. We agree with you about the final 3, but there might be some surprises -- Dirty Diana has a fighting chance.

  • jennu

I'm betting on Santino getting booted before the final 3 either because of his attitude or the adding too much ornamentation thing.

I want Nick, Chloe and Diana, but I think it'll be Nick, Chloe and Daniel V.

  • Santino, Nick and Diana. Santino for the WIN!

  • brinx

Daniel V! Daniel V! I think that he is going to take it right from under Satan-o.
