Mac and Cheese Attack

2006_01_macattack.jpgFor the past eight hours, we've been thinking about macaroni and cheese, in no small part due to Julia Moskin's mac and cheese odyssey in the Times' dining section. Even though this will seriously cripple our annual New Year's resolution of losing weight, Gothamist is determined to sate our craving for some cheesy pasta. We might head to City Bakery, but upon reading the article, we really want to try Daphne's Caribbean Express. What are some other places to hit up for mac and cheese? We've liked Cafeteria's, and Petite Abeille in Tribeca has a really rich and creamy pasta and cheese with jambon (perfect comfort food, even if it brings you one step closer to needing an angioplasty).

The Times' recipes for creamy and crusty macaroni and cheese; we prefer crusty (we also prefer muffin tops to muffin bottoms) - how about you? Gothamist cooked Canteen's max & cheese with great results.

jack's on 5th ave at 13th street has amazing mac 'n cheese.

the chip shop has an awesome baked mac 'n cheese and a pretty great deep fried one.

earl's on third ave in midtown (don't know the street exactly) has a good one, but very rich.

that jack's is in brooklyn (park slope), by the way

chip shop has both locations in brooklyn

and earl's is in manhattan

crusty is the way to go although last night i had some creamy mac and it was surprisingly good. but overall, finishing the mac up in the oven with some sprinkled cheese and bread crumbs is a winner.

The Pink Teacup on Grove and Bleecker has great Mac and Cheese and any other soul food you may be looking for

My fave is Miss Maime's Spoonbread on 110 & Columbus Ave. They definitely know soul food much better than anything I've found in the city. I can't say that the earlier posts are correct in their assessment but Jacks & the Pink Teacup must have something going on because it's not their food.

I've made the Canteen mac and cheese using the recipe posted on Gothamist months ago, and it is INCREDIBLE. Whenever i make it, people go apeshit. Seriously, it might be the perfect food. Thanks, Gothamist (and Canteen R.I.P.)

Blue Smoke's is my favorite... it only comes as a side, but very creamy and really damn good...

Too much mac and cheese means too much junk in your trunk.

Chat and Chew and Acme both of really good mac and cheese.

Jen, Jen, Jen. You adore Alton Brown but you neglect to mention his recipes? BTW, that very episode of Good Eats, "For Whom the Cheese Melts 2," will be re-aired on February 14, if you can wait that long. Happy Valentine's Day!

I thought Chat and Chew's was pretty bad.

Duke's mac and cheese, though, is awesome. They're at 99 E 19th St (manhattan).

Dumont in Williamsburg has excellent mac and cheese with or without bacon.
Mmmm...

Serendipity!

I'm just surfing through gothamist while waiting for my M&C to cool ... tried the recipe with cottage cheese & cheddar from the NYT.

I love Kitchenette's Mac & Cheese on 122nd & Amsterdam.

Hey Eefers, thanks for the referral to the Chip Shop--I tried some of their mac & cheese tonight, in fact, and found it delicious!

Do any of your mac 'n' cheese recipes include dry hot mustard powder, like Colman's? My mother's recipe includes it and it would definitely be less successful without it.

I had mac + cheese at the Roebling Tea House in Williamsburg a few weeks ago and it was tasty. I'm totally a sucker for Chat N Chew's, too...

When I do mac & cheese I tend to use a whole lot of cheeses (ususally after going nuts at Zabars) and a secret ingredient in the sauce which I will reveal here: Guinness. Another tip, if you are going to bake it, cover it with cheese instead of breadcrumbs.

I'm a huge fan of Mama's (200 E. 3rd St.)Mac n' Cheese. You can get it alone or part of the veggie platter (it goes well with their amazing brussel sprouts and roasted parsnips). Delicious!

the mac and cheese at westville is also very good.

my mom does a nice one with sherry that is lovely

Velveeta Shells & Cheese, my friends, is the king of all mac and cheeses. Don't let my uppity foodie brother brainwash you.

Any thoughts on those crispy fried onions from a can going on top? Or some crispy bacon tossed in?

I split the difference and mix breadcrumbs, parmesan black pepper, paprika, and cayenne for my topping.

I use cavatapi, which are tubular like macaroni, but spiral.

Cheese-wise, I'm pretty basic. Mostly sharp cheddar, parmesan, and something random in the fridge. I heat about 1/3 cup finely chopped onions and a couple of cloves of minced garlic in the milk. I fluctuate on how much butter/flour, but usually any more than 4 tablespoons of each can lead to some separation anxiety upon the reheat; I think if you're looking to have leftovers you should go with about 2 or 3 tablespoons.

OK I'm hungry now, as well as post-vacation insomniac.

add in sour cream and chive cream cheese. yum.

The mac & cheese at the Park Slope Ale House is really good -- simple and cheddary.

(Also, I second the recommendation of Kitchenette. The one at 122nd and Amsterdam is way better than the downtown location.)

I can't believe no one has mentioned Bubby's in this discussion. Definitely one of the best in town.

Also, Velveeta Shells and Cheese can't count because Velveeta is not real cheese. Is it?

Happy Eating.

My mom's recipe is the best. And I'm sorry, but there is no good m&c north of the Mason-Dixon (except for Mamie's, but she comes from the South). All you Yankees are fooling yourselves, especially those who think hipsters in Williamsburg can actually make it the right way.

I second Dumont. Theirs is enough mac-cheesy goodness for two! Must eat lunch now...

Dammit, now I want Mac & Cheese for lunch. Too bad I'm lactose intolerant. I guess I'll just bust out lots of Lactaid...

I know it's already been mentioned, but I must concur with the others who've noted Chip Shop's Fried Macaroni and Cheese. Pics at Hot Lunch.

I'm think Brooklyn Life nailed it on the head of her review of the mac and cheese at this Red Hook joint:

http://www.abrooklynlife.com/2005/11/red_hook_barbec.html

Relish in Williamsburg on Wythe Ave. Multiple types of cheese and a massive serving portion. Good for sharing.

the most disappointing mac and cheese we've had lately was the m&c "spring rolls" at 24 prince. sounded interesting; tasted totally blah.

Just headed over to Daphne's Caribbean Express to give their mac&cheese a try. I loved its tall, cake-like consistency, but it had almost no flavor whatsoever, nearly to a school cafeteria level of blandness. Disappointing!
