BREAKING: Ta Ta To Teany-- Totally True!

Hot on the heels of the comes this news from Gothamist Labs: "At TEANY this morning.... There was a huge meeting with Moby this morning and he annouced that Teany today is the final day and he gave everyone one weeks compensation pay. They are going to reopen in a month with something different, but they fired everyone as of today."

Holy shit-- if this turns out to be true, it'll be the biggest news since, um, the horse accident this morning! Jesus-- there are no words. Tears! Running! Down! Face!

UPDATE: Jen called Teany for the official word:

jen: i just called!
jen: they aren't even opening today
jen: they are trying to eat up all the fruit salad
jen: i asked why they were closing and the guy said "money"
jen: aren't there enough vegan hipsters in the les to support a rocker's cafe?

Question: what will happen to the Teany Beverages tea-distribution operation? The "Calming Tea" flavor was pretty good-- although it did have a weird aftertaste.

UPDATE: one of our commenters writes: "From the Moby website, posted this morning: "contrary to some of the rumors that are floating around, teany isn't being shut down. we are going to close for a few weeks to revamp and re-model, but we're not shutting down. thanks for your interest, and happy new year. -moby and kelly" Hmmm... "

Sort of a philisophical question: if you fire your entire staff, and close up for a month, and then reopen as a different kind of place, are you really staying open? We thinks not, Moby! We demand justice for your muffin-serving staff! Someone should probably start making picketing signs right now.

UPDATE from Jen: Spoke to Kelly Tisdale who said that teany will "possibly" reopen. If that happens, it will be within a month, but it will not be under the same management (however, Kelly will still be there). She added that the tea beverage operation (that she and Moby are partners are in) is still going exist and that everything that's online is still available.

    Hi LES hipster!

I like the Teanychino, the Almond Joy, the Lavender tea and, of course, the great Raspbellini (or three!). I haven't often eaten there though on my visits, although I have tried the Pan Bagnia, the no-Turkey Club and the Chef's Salad (w/out cheese) and they were pretty yummy. I've also tried the chocolate cheesecake (delicious but a little too rich for me), the plain cheesecake (yummy) and the Apple Crumble Pie, which was abolutely delicious so I had that twice.

Ditch the girlfriend. No fun talking to a brick wall.

And as for gas? Better out than in!

I always spend time at Teany whenever I come over to New York (I live in London). It is a nice place to meet and mingle with friends. I hope very much that the "revamp" that Moby has suggested in his Journal will prove a great success.

Teany was very much open last night (1/8/06). What's going on?

I'm a LES hipster and I will miss sipping my hot teany tea (#38) while silently sitting across from my model girlfriend who doesn't care if I'm alive. I sure will miss trying hard not to pass gas in my tight vintage wranglers. Oh the good old days of rolling my eyes and looking so cool, too cool, to cool for hot tea. I will miss the mirrors I'd fix hair do in and avoiding eye contact with my fellow patrons.

I need a job and I'm really confused. Although now I HAVE to get a new job. I'm angry. sad, and trying to find things to eat. Thanks a lot.

This morning's AMNY cites you as breaking the story and the source of the rumor....

moby has something to say himself:

    "hi,

MOBY IS BORING. If Young Jeezy or At The Gates opened a cafe I would go.

  • former employee

he surely did fire us all this morning, and if any of us are hired back, it will be only one or two. moby gave it hands-down to kelly, and walked (i mean scurried) away. the sign on the door says 'closed for renovations', which means that they just wanted a way to hire at 6 bucks an hour instead of the former 8 or 9. the majority of us had planned on quitting anyway, but they beat us to it.

moby is a damn pussy. i think the money went to his head.

Does this include Teany to Go? They make a mean breakfast bagel (with fakin' Canadian Bacon) as well as other delights (for when you don't want to go to Kate's). Frankly, Teany itself had a little too much attitude for me (though i did like their high tea).

  • It probably has something to do with that missing dog.

  • rev pays

What's this Teany thing? never heard of it.

Tea is overpriced as it is already, everytime I buy an iced tea, I feel gyped.

Tea should come with free refills.

  • smitty

bring back the teany turkey club! the club! bring it back!

  • now i must share the truly bizarre label on the back of the expensive, teany herbal citrus cooler that i purchased at the mr. dumpling counter out of curiosity:

thank you for drinking this teany drink. no, really: thank you. and if you're ever in the neighyborhood (we're on rivington between ludlow and orchard) come visit us and we'll give you a free piece of pie. well, actually, we probably won't be able to give you a free piece of pie. in our heart of hearts we'd love to give you a free piece of pie, but that's no way to run a business, right? we're sure you understand, as you're a very smart and savvy person, and don't let anyone ever tell you otherwise. [Ed. note - so basically, no pie, but here's your consolation prize, some balm for your raw, chafed self esteem.] still, come visit, and we're sorry about the 'no free pie' policy. thanks, kelly and moby

  • actually moby the musician is named after the whale also. he is related to herman melville.

  • i have a stuffed animal, a large fluffy white cow, and his name is moby the cow. but he's not named after moby the musician; he's named after the famed white whale

  • nola

Looks like Moby is another one of those high minded liberals that treats his employees like dirt. Too busy pontificating about world affairs to give a thought to his struggling workers.

  • thinking so hard my head hurts

hey, i've worked in my parents' small restaurant. it's not easy being small, cuz we don't have economies of scale advantage. it's also a low margin kinda business. some things, like the cost of insurance for employees would make the whole business unprofitable and pointless. just because we perceived someone has money, (which i assumed was not amased from the coffee shop), doesn't mean that he should not abide by economic principals and sanity. this is not a comunist country, you can choose your own destiny or job.
