We have a confession to make. We really, really love trash TV. We're not talking run-of-the-mill trash like Desperate Housewives (watched the first season, stopped caring) or syndicated trash like the Tyra Banks Show (uhm... won't turn it off if it comes on). No, we're talking about the kind of trash that you have to work to find and watch. We're the kind of people who have gone out of our way to watch every made-for-TV movie Tori Spelling has ever been in (Have you seen Co-ed Call Girl? Yeah, we have). Which brings us to the wonderful gift that SoapNet has given us for the past three months: Pasadena.
What in the world are we talking about? Oh, just the best canceled night-time soap you never saw. Created by Mike White (Chuck & Buck) in 2001 the show follows the Greeleys of Pasadena, an awesomely fucked up power-family in California who not only own the biggest newspaper in town they seem to own the police as well. Fox canceled the show after airing only four episodes (kinda understandable what with the implied incest, the drug abuse, the murders, the suicides, the conspicuous consumption, the over-sexed Reverend, the corrupt therapist, the body buried in the bushes and general insanity maybe the show was "too dark" for the immediate post-9/11 climate) but luckily for us, the thirteen episodes that were still filmed are now being aired for the first time.
We're really not doing the spectacular nature of the show justice though. The cast is consistently excellently over the top (Dana Delany chews the scenery as if she were auditioning for a remake of Mommie Dearest while even the normally irritating Alison Lohman shines, and who knew Balthazar Getty was still acting?). But really, this is one of those things you are just going to have to trust us on. The last episode, in which the shows main mystery will reportedly be solved, airs tonight (can you say "New Year's Eve Pre-game?"). More importantly, however, SoapNet is going to re-air the entire series on Monday from 11am till Midnight. Seriously, if you love night-time dramas you, or your TiVo, really should check it out. If only so someone will eventually release the show on DVD.
Which leads us to one last question, just out of curiosity, uhm, are we the only people who lurve this show or has our taste finally hit the bottom of the barrel?

"Gothamist is a website about New York City and everything that happens in it. That means jonas news and events, restaurants and bars, happenings and goings-on. Gothamist has an avid and growing readership, and an even more avid and growing staff."
Someone please read the above post and tell me what the fuck it has to do with new york. Law & Order I understand, but a 400-word essay on a canceled TV show about, of all places, california? I think some of you believe you're writing your own personal blog, not a site about nyc.
You are absolutely correct. This post has nothing to do with New York. Just wanted to make sure you were paying attention.
whew! what a relief to know i'm not the only one!
you may, in fact, be the only person who lurves this show
If you're going to talk about a show with Martin Donovan in it, I think you should diverge from the stated Gothamist purpose on a bi-weekly basis (at the very least). And you're definitely not the only person who loves Pasadena.
Pasadena was awesome, and people who live in New York (like myself) loved watching it when it was originally on Fox and were sad for it to be cancelled, making it important to New Yorkers. To those New Yorkers who it's not important to, it's remarkable how easy it is to not read a post. I'm just saying ...
Meanwhile, thanks for the heads-up on the Monday marathon. I never say any of the unaired episodes. My DiVo is now set.
If you're a Pasadena fan, you must also be a Knots Landing fan. I hope I'm not the only one who loved both. Relevance to NYC - haven't we all seen re-runs of every L & O (plus CI and SVU)!!! I need something else to watch this winter (not sure if I get this channel, didn't even know it existed).
(Raising my hand) Yeah, I got hooked. Too bad they didn't get the back nine so they could finish the wrap-around element introduced at the top of the series. But they tied it up as well as they could after 13.
The Monday marathon is supposed to include "extras" during the breaks, hosted by Dana Delany. Might save the cost of the DVD set.
Another great show that didn't survive: STARVED on FX, about 4 Brooklynites living with eating disorders. One of my absolute favorites EVER. The writing on the show was dark and wry, and Jackie Hoffman --- as the abusive leader of their not-so-supportive group "Belt Tighteners" --- was hilarious.
relevance to nyc? well there are a fair # of us crosscountry kids who go back and forth btwn LA and NYC.
anyway, the UPN show about the dippy loser hipsters in Silverlake called "sex, lies or something like that" was one of the most entertaining pieces of crap out there. too bad it survived for about 3 weeks before chris rock's show began showing twice a week instead.
Relevance to NYC? Aren't lazy days at home in front of the TV part some people's big city holiday weekend experience? If you don't like the item, move on to the next one. Or hop over to another blog.
Anyway, on topic... No, you are not the only Pasadena fan, Garth. And thanks for the heads up. I was instantly hooked on this show's initial 4-episode run on Fox. By the second episode, I was having friends over for viewings on Friday nights over drinks. We were all shocked by the last-minute cancellation with no notice. (At the time, it felt like we were the only 4 people in L.A. who watched the show.)
I don't watch Soapnet and didn't even know that the full 13-episode arc was being run. This show was amazing--great cast, good writing-Mike White!, next-level "trash TV". (I also agree with you that the mediocre Desperate Housewives doesn't even come close. Good for you for lasting the full 1st season. I gave up after the first 4 eps.) It seems like the late 90s thru early 00s was the last gasp for interesting fictive network television television shows. In a pre-reality TV era, genre shows that slightly pushed the envelope and tweaked the conventions (Pasadena, Freak and Geeks, Action, Popular, Profit) were allowed to go on-air. I'm really excited to spend my lazy day at home today watching the 9 episodes I've never seen.
A DVD release would be great. Of all the shows I mentioned above, it's the only one not yet slated for release. (Let's hope that the original music cues from the originally-aired 4 episodes are cleared for use in the DVD release, if it ever happens.) With Soapnet's marketing of the show, I really think a market would exist for the product.
Now if they would just show the unaired episodes of "Wonderland" (the shortlived series starring Martin Donovan and Ted Levine, set in a psychiatric hospital) well, that would be great!
The first episode featured a pregnant staff member being stabbed in the belly with a used needle.
you are definitely not the only one. I started watching over christmas and the show(Pasadena) is amazing!!!! which it was still on!!!!! still watching and it's february..haha
