Fox Makes Crone Fly

2005_12_pennycrone.jpgHoly moly, Fox 5 gave Penny Crone quite a Christmas/Hanukkah gift when it fired her from the morning show! Crone, who has been around, well, forever in Gothamist's mind, had returned to Fox 5 earlier this year, after getting fired from CBS 2's local newscast. Crone could always be counted on doing or saying something totally crazy - even though her voice kinda killed us, we're going to miss her. Maybe the WPIX 11 morning show will pick her up!

Penny's Fox 5 bio and NY magazine's interview with Penny Crone in 2002 - she talks about the time she called Yogi Berra "Yogi Bear!" And another detail from the Daily News story about Crone's firing - Fox 5 might want to get Arnold Diaz AND Toni Senecal!

I relly enjoyed Penny. She cheered up the mornings. Just because she did'nt look like a Top Model, she was enjoyable. I miss her and will not watch Channel 5 news any more. I will find something else to watch!!!

Well I always watched 5 fox news. My boyfriend was too cheap to get cable, at home I watched Fox and Friends on Channel 26. I recently moved in with him and there is no more Penny Crone. I loved her. O.K., shed not 98 lbs. Doesn't look like a Top Model, but she was down to earth and a lotta fun. I will not watch 5 anymore since I found out fox fired her. I will find her, and whatever channel she is on I will watch.

she had nothing to do with buttering my bread, nor am i looking for her to take me with her to 5, just trying to provide some insight from someone that worked with her. she never expected anyone to do her work for her, and in this business, that is rare.

  • anthony

paula - come on, we know you worked with her and of course she got your bread buttered. but even a statement like that, won't get her to take you to channel 5. you may have to edit for someone else now. "she deserves it?" hey, look out for yourself, not someone else who is makign 10x what you are.

  • paula

lured away. 11 wanted to keep her but fox had a much better offer. i worked with her, she works really hard, and she deserves it.

  • Adam

Does anyone know if toni was fired or lured away by fox news?

  • Duane P.

Thank goodness Toni is now off channel 11. One night a week was OK, but not every night. Except for her special on Libya a couple of years ago, she was always very unprofessional.

  • Richard Toth

What took Fox 5 so long to get rid of her. I wish her well but I used to leave the room or turn off the TV when she came on. She was the worst at what they had her do and oh how annoying. Rich

Penny is a GODsend! I still recall her Giggles bar balcony collapse where 13 people went to the hospital inured and she closed 'Tonight there's nothing to laugh about at Giggles, from Midtown I'm Penny Crone'. This story still cracks them up at parties! The 2003 Blackout where she harrassed little kids at Jones Beach 'Hurry up time is money on TV'. Priceless!

Fox 5 blows big time now...

Penny is now a reporter for 'Howard 100 News' on Sirius Satellite Radio.

  • Steven

Well, as long as they didn't get rid of that fine, muscular specimen Mike Woods. He is the only reason I watch "Good Day New York".

  • lloolooishere

i think its sad.it just shows how shallow l can be

i thought she was fun for laughs.

I will never forget being in an elevator when Penny Crone came rushing in... She was out of breath and huffing and puffing... She proceeded to inform everyone, in her gravily voice, on the ride up that:

"Somebody just got smushed by a car on 9th Avenue"

It took everyithing in my power not to respond in an equally gravily voice with an exagerated brooklyn accent:

"Now shud up and pour me a Rob Roy! And git me a light for my Pawll Mawll... Damnit!"

I can only hope that CBS AM offers her Season Tix to the Yankees in exchange for live break ins from the crowds on it's broadcasts

  • I think part of it was that she doesn't grab the 18-35 year old audience as say Naamua Delaney would. Personally I don't watch the news for eyecandy, but for news. I guess that is why I watch WNBC which seems to be the most serious of the TV news operations. Although they did get rid of Michelle Marsh a few years back in favour of the younger and more politically correct Lynda Baquero. But, thankfully Chuck Scarborough and Sue Simmons are New York institutions that are most likely going to stay there until they want to leave.

And I have some fuzzy childhood memories of channel 5, then WNEW-TV, having real news instead of this dumbed down Fox News crap.

  • Too bad about Penny. Channel 5 seems to be getting a bit of age-ism. She didn't fit in in an age of beauty contestant femme reporters. Perhaps radio has a home for her.

Her greatest moment was the day after a January blizzard. She was in a diner talking to a bunch of burly guys who had just been out plowing.

Penny: "If you guys are all in here, who's plowing the snow?"

Burly Guy, after a bite of omelet: "Mexicans."

  • uhhhhhh

Great. Now I have to rub off the FOX 5 - PENNY 4 EVER tattoo I got across my dick to celebrate her last rehiring.

    Anyone want to help?

  • Penny Crone was only good for the comedy value.

  • Corey

Nah nah nah nah, nah nah nah nah, hey hey hey goodbye!

My sentiments pretty much echo those above.

How do I dispise thee? Let me count the ways...

Her derranged open mouthed perma-smile (which reminds me of the derranged open mouthed smile that Conan O'Brien's announcer makes for laughs when he's in a skit)

Her 3 packs of cigarettes a day voice

Her creepy, non-professional hitting on men

Her "look how wacky I am" mugging for the camera

Now if they could only get rid of the cother consumate professional, Rosanna Scotto...

  • bubba

the worst. nails on a chalkboard. good riddance.

  • TJ

Good riddance! As the "she'll doing anything for fun" role reporter on the morning show, she was annoying and brought nothing to the table. Same thing for Larry Hoff on the WB11 morning news. She is more annoying than he is though.

When she did hard news, she was watchable, but as the dunce-cap wearing reporter, no thanks.

  • Susie

What about Arnold Diaz? I always enjoyed his "Shame on You" segments. A nice change from the perfunctory news bites.

  • Joy

I can't believe it took this long to get rid of her. Her face, her voice, her confrontational style, all horrific turn-offs that made me cringe. She's the old broad on the subway who will wrestle you for a seat and bite you if she has to. Okay, so that's gutsy and all, but I don't want that scratchy voiced haggard old crone (rim shot!) on my TV set. Good riddance!!!!

  • E

Thank GOD. I stopped watching Fox 5 when they brought her on board.

  • notreadingyourreplies

good, get that .itch off my tv.

  • areacode212

Oh, never mind, I see that Toni has already left Ch. 11. Well, OK, then I approve of Fox 5 putting her back on the air and giving us more of her trademark wackiness (and hotness).

  • areacode212

Toni Senecal moving to Fox 5??? Noooooooo...I can't imagine the WB11 News at 10 without my dose of Toni Time. Admittedly...I haven't watched it lately, but still.

  • Noooo! I loved her! I liked the way she always seemed kind of drunk or high, even though it was early in the AM and she probably wasn't. And yes, the hitting on of anything in pants was so refreshing because unlike the other ultra-coiffed, stick-up-the-butt newsladies, Penny looked like she knew how to get down!

  • J

I can't believe they gave Penny the boot - I always liked her willingness to anything and the way she hit on men who were half her age all the time.
